SDIT Puppy TEAM Wk 3

Here is the video replay for Week 3.

In this session we discussed the importance of Puppy Routines that fit your day to day schedule. This includes potty routines, nap routines, settle on a mat, training routines, and much more.

Here are the games that we played:

Pattern Game 3, 2, 1 Treat -

Tammy & Doogan demonstrated this game for us with a video that you can find here: https://youtube.com/shorts/ygOgJwjhK18?si=1ya3-z2DazhM3UJ9  This is a prep game that can later be used for the LATTE (Look At That, Then Enrichment) Game, the Look Away Game, the Look At Me Game, and several others. The idea is that every time you hit 1, the puppy gets a treat so you start with saying 1, then treat, building up to saying 2, 1, then treat, and building up again to saying 3, 2, 1 Treat.

Reverse Heel

This game builds on the Find Heel Game we played last week where we helped a puppy learn to find the heel position and take a few steps. In this game you move backwards with the puppy walking directly in front of you or off to a side where they can hit your target hand. Tammy & Doogan demonstrate that here: https://youtube.com/shorts/T0mbVhV1VaU?si=y5a5LBozd1e4qWnv

We discussed how every game can also include check ins and you can build value for eye contact by reinforcing those natural check ins.

Cooperative Care Games

We played 2 cooperative care games this week.

Touch for Treats

This is a simple where game where you touch the puppy on any body part with your hand, a wash cloth, or a brush and give them a treat. The touches move around, but always are followed by a treat. Here is Kristi and Nylah demonstrating this game with a brush: https://youtu.be/s0v6Z_amkXY?si=T7AWJcBT_ylDW7l_ Kristi is using a lickmat in this video so that Nylah is getting continuous treats while Kristi brushes her.

Cone Games for Muzzle Desensitization

This game is designed to help puppies get used to things touching their face which helps with gear desensitization when puppy is older. Gear required for your SDiT might include a muzzle, head halter, googles, ear protection, etc. This game is a prep game for that gear.

Trading Games

We discussed this game but didn't have a video ready from the current puppies. Basically this is how we start to develop a retrieve and get puppy moving to us when they have an object in their mouth instead of running away with that object. You can learn more about trade games in the Positively Puppy 6 Collection and the Puppy Play With Purpose Collection.
