Kauthar al-Khadim

Al-Amin became the caliph upon the death of his father in the year 809. He fell madly in love with one of his male slaves, Kauthar, whom he had named after a river in paradise. Al-Amin composed many poems about Kauthar, including one in which he said that “Kauthar is my life and afterlife, my ailment and my medicine.”

What seek the people of a lover
Afflicted for one he loves?
Kauthar is my faith and my worldly fortune
Both my sickness and my physician;
The most despicable of man is he who reproveth
A lover on account of his beloved
