It didn't contract. Chrollo originally assumed that they could avoid the deaths by leaving. Hisoka fortune is just new information which challenged his assumption.

That is why they were so insistent to keep the event going without any deviations. They wanted to project strength despite how many losses they took and how increasingly obvious it became that they were in over their heads.
