Unfortunately for us, the way we'd want further explanation - a Gus spinoff - is likely never going to happen as Esposito has said the character is both consuming but also, to him, serves only to further other story lines. His mystery is his gift. That said, what thickens the plot is all the hints at family and children dropped by Gus in seasons 3 and 4. Much of the latter are to compare Gus and Walt during their season 4 chess match, but remember the dinner Walt was invited to. Gus mentions he can never cook his spicy stew because of his kids. I wonder if that's a lie too.

Pinochet loyalist, very possibly. As another commented below, gay... also, seems very possible. Have you been watching Better Call Saul? For those who don't, please don't read any further. If so, recall the episode where Mike meets Lydia for the first time to begin laundering his profits. When Mike makes some remark about Gus being a drug dealer, Lydia says "if that's all you think he is, you don't know Gus Fring." And it's always bothered me - in a good way - the manner in which we see the Madrigal executive off himself at the beginning of season five. Seems WAY too consumed to just have been a business connect who happened to help deal drugs for side profits. Then, there's Esposito's Spanish. Even he has remarked he needed to do something unusual with it, and Gilligan has acknowledged in previous panel discussions that some have mentioned his unusual diction/pronunciation. Now, again, many things are left to the viewer's imagination on purpose, which is great. Out of pure speculation though, I would LOVE to see Gus given an even greater back story, involving a background in Europe. Maybe he is a natural Chilean national, but he got supported Contra style to progress someone else's agenda in Pinochet's army. Then, when found out, he hightailed it to Mexico, with his partner, perhaps a Pinochet supporter who risked it all to save Gus. Lastly, can you specifically remember and/or look up when Gus was referred to as a general? Obsessed as I am with this show, I do not remember a single scene where Hector refers to Gus with anything else but slurs for gay people and nods to Pollos Hermanos.

2019-04-30 18:34:07 +0000 UTCThis was the episode that started the theory that Gus may have been at a high level within the Pinochet regime in Chile, possibly even reporting directly to Pinochet himself. It feels plausible and would get Gus a lot of respect and possibly protection out of fear of what Pinochet or his regime would do if Gus was harmed. I believe back in a flashback in season 3 Hector referred to Gus as a general.
