Guys there’s a Difference between a meltdown and the core exploding, there are many YouTube videos now explaining it in a way that’s easy to understand, I recommend searching for it because it helps to understand how fucked up it really was

Nuclear energy...it's like an airplane...well used and manage, it's great for what it must do and problems are rare and usually manage by expert on the field...if it's build cheap or mismanage, it can become a catastrophe...

It should be noted that no one died from the 3 Mile Island disaster. There might have been slightly increased cancer rates, but even that is still debated because that area of the country has high amounts of natural radon, which leads to increased cancer rates. Point is we don't really know if 3 Mile Island caused any long term harm.

I mean, if we build a lot more nuclear power plants doesn't that increase the changes of it happening again (due to human error and/or natural disaster?). And I feel like whereas one person gets struck by lightning and thats a horrible tragedy for him/her and his/her family, one nuclear explosion is catastrophic to millions of people.

I would hold off going into such detail until they’ve finished the series and the truth of what occurred that night has been revealed (and the end credits detailing the changes). It’s still a story for them to experience at the end of the day I still definitely think you should share this, but I’d wait until episode 5.

First of all, I am glad that you started the reaction on Chernobyl. So the things that I would like to explain in the first place. This is not a documentary series, but an artistic one. There are mistakes and changes to please the passions and drama. The fallen bird was just for drama. First of all, it’s worth understanding that no one wanted to send people to death and kill the whole city, because it’s stupid. would kill many more people than radiation. The core of the reactor would really be impossible if it were not for the terrible coincidence of circumstances. The station workers showed themselves courageously working on it to the end and not abandoning their comrades and shutting down the reactor, but it still exploded. People tended to underestimate radiation and this was their main mistake Dyatlov was not an idiot, he really did not believe that the reactor exploded. The failure of various departments led to the fact that the reactor was not suitable for such work and was dangerous, but the station workers did not know about it, which led to a terrible tragedy. Watch documentaries and listen to eyewitnesses to understand the full picture.

Because it is still the the safest and cleanest way of generating electricity that we have, while still being able to meet the demand. Closing nuclear power plants now would increase polution, electricity prices, and related deaths for decades until renewable energy can catch up to the demand.

The scientist was heavily protected (only parts of his face not covered by the gas mask were exposed), and he spent no more than a few minutes near it. If you touch the elephant's foot, you will receive a fatal dose. Thankfully its descent into the ground has slowed dramatically. There was concern of a China Syndrome scenario where the material would reach groundwater, but that's no longer a worry.

I started watching this recently and honestly had to limit myself to one episode at a time because after watching the first couple in a row I was actively stressed out. This show is amazing but dang is it a difficult watch sometimes.

Once you guys are done with this, I highly suggest checking out The Terror! Also featuring Jared Harris. He's incredible in it as well and it's a great underrated show that deserves more love and I think you guys would be really into it!

100% with Marketa when it comes to the use of nuclear power plants. Unfortunately, most human beings are selfish and are not willing to give up anything, especially when the repercussions of their actions will not affect them (but instead affect future generations). Pat, if I was there I would have (with affection) slapped you on the back of your head at the end there lol

Really excited to see this show up. They did a heck of a job telling the story. They used an ever expanding timeline(so episode 1 covered the first 3-5 hours after, ep.2 the initial 3-5 days, then 3-5 weeks and 3-5 months) which did a great job at showing the scope of events. I don’t want to type anything that might be spoilery, so I’ll wait until we know you’re finished before discussing story details.

The “elephant’s foot” corium lump is no longer immediately fatal, though you still shouldn’t spend more than a few minutes next to it and access to it is heavily restricted. The photo of it you mention several times in the video wasn’t taken with mirrors but in person by a scientist measuring radiation levels ten years after the meltdown. He got to within a couple feet of it and hasn’t suffered any long term health effects

That was an aggravating post-episode discussion.

Great to see you all doing this show. Chernobyl will always have a special impact on my family as we participated in the Children of Chernobyl program that brought kids from Belarus to the US for a month to get out of the radiation and get proper medical care. Just a month away was supposed to increase their life span substantially. We took the same brother and sister in every summer for 4 years and they and their parents are like an extended family. The Belorussian government still to this day downplays how bad the radiation is still. Their chaperone was shown the fallout zone on US internet and broke down crying in our family room from how worse it was than she was told.

You really don't need to worry about nuclear power plants anymore. There is a better chance of getting struck by lightning a couple times than one ever doing this again due to human error. Fukushima was a natural disaster so that one is in its own category. Just don't bother yourself with worrying about something that will never happen again.

Spoilers (kinda) - It's not easy to fathom the potential tragedy this could have been. It was a horrible horrible thing, and a lot of innocent people suffered. However, what it could have become if those scientists involved didnt stand up to the state would have left half of the eastern hemisphere uninhabitable.... insane to think about.

I was 6 when this happened and I remember it. I’m from south of Sweden and in the days following I recall our parents discussing if it was ok for us to go out and play due to winds bringing radioactivity up over Sweden. Scary shit. Just the other day me and some friends were discussing how so many people we know suffer from cancer, and like an afterthought and with a shrug everyones like ”eh...Chernobyl” They say it’s not likely to be the cause of cancer in Sweden. They say. I haven’t watched this series yet but I’ve seen loads of documentaries and what really stuck with me is... Spoiler had they not prevented a second explosion or like stopped the breakdown from reaching that 2nd layer, all of Europe would be uninhabitable Scary shit indeed.

Interesting. And a great production with amazing acting all around. Just surprised you guys reacted to it. Dont feel compelled to react just because a lot of people request it or it's the topic of the moment. And not implying that happened either, truly I mean no disrespect. Just (haven't watched your reaction yet) and I'm assuming by now that you guys have watched all five episodes, this dark material, with nothing to gain from clever plot devices or suspenseful hooks usually implemented in these types of productions, I'm not sure people want to see nonstop sadness and contempt in reactions. I remember when you guys did The Night Of, and it was great because that was, in the end, a terrific all-around take on the whodunit scheme. Regardless, glad yall watched and if you're like me, learned an incredibly sad amount about that event and how it really affected all of Russia. Always happy to see real life heroes get their due, and the two characters the two Male leads portrayed, along with all those towns people and reactor personnel who tried to do the right thing... it's stunning to me that this whole thing was orchestrated by the guy who wrote Senseless and four Scary Movies/Hangover flicks.
