Plus it was intended to acknowledge an interesting aspect of the Soviet Union. That is that while they weren’t often promoted to positions of authority, the “worker’s party” ideology pushed by the state resulted in much higher numbers of women working in STEM fields then North America at the time(I’ve heard in the 80’s that somewhere between 30-40% of these positions were held by women). A perfect example is that while much was made at the time about Sally Ride being the first female astronaut in 1983 to fly to space, the soviets sent the first female cosmonaut(Valentina Tereshkova) into space literally decades earlier in 1963, barely 2 years after the first manned space flights began. For that reason, when they created the character meant to represent all the numerous scientists working alongside Legasov and Shcherbina, they felt it would be a disservice to that historical fact if all three main characters were men.

We love HBo's series here in Russia. Average rating above 9. Vichnaya Pamyat means everlasting memory. Chernobyl means sagebrush.

Solution for this so these people won't cry is just have one male and one female representing the scientists. Would be kinda stupid tho.

Thank you Chris for reminding everyone to do their own research. All the keyboard warriors do is whine about the female scientist. Of course they don't whine about Pavel. Or any of the other male characters who narratively represent a large group of people, as is done in almost every historical narrative. This show is not even close to being a documentary so technically speaking this show is seventy percent "creative liberties". So she's a woman, like, get tf over it. There were female scientists at Chernobyl. There were less women than men because of antiquated traditions about gender and education, traditions that still exist today. But you'd rather a group of scientists of both genders be represented by one man? Either you have historical accuracy, or the writers take creative liberties for narrative impact. Pick one. You'd rather have a room full of a hundred scientists in every scene? Be my guest.

Why ascribe a negative association to the female scientist character? HBO made it clear that she is a representation of the male and female scientists that fought behind the scenes to bring out the truth.

Great discussion Normies!! If you're interested in the continuing story, Netflix has a documentary by PBS, "Building Chernobyl's Megatomb," about the containment structure built. Not only is that super fascinating but it also shows old footage, many of which they depict in the show. Really interesting to see.
