Most birds have incredibly weak senses of smell and wouldn’t be able to tell whether their offspring have been handled by people. It’s still generally recommended that you leave nests alone (it’s illegal to mess with them in some states), but it won’t cause the babies to be abandoned if you do. Source: I work at a veterinary hospital and deal with wild birds fairly often.
