Hopper has been inside the upside down before. My theory is he ran into the entrance of the upside side down before Joyce turned the key...and while she was looking away. HOPPER IS ALIVE! I've heard people say "The American" could be Murray or Eleven's dad from season 1.

I hope The American is Papa, and not Hopper... Not a fan when shows can't commit to main character deaths. Either kill the character or don't, but don't do fake-out-deaths just so you can get a cheap reaction of killing a main character without the commitment of having the actor leave the show...

Yeah crazy how much I love Steve did not see this coming in season 1 but I think it was his "friends" who wrote the stuff about Nancy and I'm pretty sure he wasn't happy about it

in the last shot after joyce flips the switch i think, there is a wide shot of the far side of the generator and there isn't a hopper in sight when there really should be, it is right before the portal door closes. And not only that but there is a strong moment when hopper looks at the encroaching, lightning looks at the portal/door and then looks at joyce and smiles as if to say its okay go for it. well i think the shot of him looking at the door is supposed to hint at that fact because it was shot as if from hoppers perspective and it was following a shot of him looking at him exit and seeing that it was blocked by an arch of electricity so he turned and looked for another exit found it and then nodded to joyce like its okay, ill be alright -- or at least that is how i saw it
