I remember when it first aired, fans were not receptive of it. But I love the writers taking a moment to write their own parody within the show.

2023-01-19 19:37:33 +0000 UTCThe big thing is, Xander DID save the day. He saved the world, actually. If that bomb had went off, it would have killed the Scoobies right above it while they were battling the Hellmouth opening. He stopped the bombing. This was a big character moment for Xander. Like Oz said near the beginning, Xander was having some identity issues. He'd been screwing up lately and now basically being the only "normal" person in the group, he feels left behind. He feels more and more invisible and irrelevant. This episode showed that he does have something special. He has heart and even though he's very often scared, but when the chips are down, he's willing to risk himself without much thought because that's just who he is. That's why he jumps into the fray the way he does and sometimes gets hurt, like in the beginning. The whole episode he keeps trying to be seen as "cool" because of his insecurities and he just keeps getting either punk'd or dismissed the entire episode. The next morning, he could have told everyone that he saved the day, could have even rubbed it in Cordelia's face, but he didn't. He realized that he didn't need others' validation. Being the guy with the heart and willing to fight monsters despite lacking any "powers" is something he accomplishes daily. He's doesn't need to brag about what he does because of his newfound confidence and self-esteem, he more sure of who he is now, and what he's capable of, and that's what mattered to him to grow and move forward in his life. Him saving the world was a proud moment that he's willing to keep to himself... This episode was a brilliant display of doing a character centered story arc within an episode, but in a very creative fashion by making the normal A & B plots swap places, while making the episode through Xander's perspective on his life. There's a whole apocalypse happening but it's the B plot to Xander's random kooky adventure. Because it's mostly from Xander's perspective, certain things are exaggerated. The WHOLE Scoobies dismissing and ignoring him as aggressively as they did this episode, Cordelia verbally destroying him every time they see each other, heavy bullying from the school psycho, Buffy & Angel's melodramatic relationship scene (basically making it a parody of their angsty scenes), ect. This is all seen through Xander's eyes...
