Art Career Masterclass Part 1: Define Your Product

Hey guys,

Making money as an artist is not an easy task. With so many talented artists competing for attention, it's crucial to understand the market for your art and find ways to stand out.

Art is not just entertainment; it's the beautiful bridge between products and audiences. Artists tell stories to capture people's attention, deliver powerful messages, and create connections. But behind every piece of art is a product. So, the challenge is to spot what's behind.

In this article, we will focus on the three tips to help you shape your art into products and make money as an artist: defining your product.

Make the right questions. Defining your product is essential to making money as an artist. Ask yourself what the product is behind the art you love. What are they selling and how are they generating profits? Understanding precisely the area where you're putting your efforts will help you understand the demand of your potential audience. When analyzing a product, consider its specific aspects, like lighting, sounds, colors, or feelings it evokes, such as action, calm, or fear. By understanding this, you can better shape the direction of your creations. The same applies to other industries; understanding the product's function will help you build better products for that industry.

Find people like you. As an artist, it's essential to know your niche and target audience. While it's great to create art that appeals to a wide range of people, focusing on a specific group can help you build a loyal fanbase that appreciates and supports your work. To identify your niche, think about the themes, styles, or subjects that resonate with you and your art. Once you've pinpointed your niche, research the audience that is most likely to appreciate and connect with your work. Understanding their preferences, needs, and expectations will help you create art that appeals to them and, in turn, increase your chances of success in the market.

Your differentiator (style). Identify your unique selling points (USPs). Your USPs are the qualities that set you apart from other artists in the market. By emphasizing these aspects in your art, you can create a niche for yourself and attract a dedicated audience that appreciates your distinct style and approach.

To identify your USPs, consider what makes your art different from others, whether it's your technique, subject matter, storytelling, or a combination of factors. Embrace these unique elements and showcase them in your work to create a stronger and more memorable artistic identity.

In conclusion, defining your product is an essential step in making money as an artist. By understanding the connection between art and the products you consume, you can better tailor your creations to the market's demands and pave the way for a successful career.
