How so?

I mean it's 1940s Japan. The aunt was probably one of the nicer people during war time.

Saito is a kid and I can't blame his thought process but as someone who's older I can only say what I would do now and what I think they should have done; I think at the end of the day the pair should have stayed with the aunt even though she sucks, If you consider whats happening outside at the time the movie takes place and then you weigh that against the aunt being annoying then the answer is pretty clear. What I will say is that the aunt was basically planting seeds for them to leave when she brings up their other family and tells them that maybe they should go live in a cave, but I do think it was pride that killed them because even at that age once I realized that my little sister/brothers life was in my hands I would've never put them in that position.

You guys would've seen something having to do with the air raids in Godzilla Minus One, when they just drop flaming wood down because of so many things in Japan are built out of wood; the wood helps with earthquakes but thats a huge liability when it comes to things like fire and they used that against them.

War is often a necessary evil. Without it, far worse things would happen, especially if we're using WW2 as the primary context. Japan at the time was arguably worse than even the Nazis, and needed to be stopped.

It makes is sadder when you look up the author of the original story Akiyuki Nosaka who used his experience to write the story. He lost his sister due to malnutrition and was a way to work through the guilt of feeling responsible for her death. He actually survived and didn't share food when he could have. He as also a 14 year old who lost everything and was a war orphan so it's not a 1:1 for what any of us would do.

While it's a difficult watch, I think it's one everyone should watch at least once. It shows the true human cost of war. We like to think we've gotten better as a society and no longer target civilians in war, but it still happens. It's easy for us to dehumanize our enemies and war and find ways to justify our actions.

Count me as another person who owns this movie on DVD... and watched it once. I honestly think Grave of the Fireflies is an important movie, it paints such a brutally honest image of the price normal citizens pay for war. But I don't know if I could ever actually watch the full film gain, it's beyond heartbreaking. Amazing, well made, deserves it's praise... but heartbreaking.

I own this movie since it's initial DVD release. I've watched it exactly 1 time.

I can see any shred of joy leaving their souls as they watch...
