A witch or wizard or what have you, tells you not to do something...but neglects to tell you WHY you shouldn't do it. And because they didn't tell you, you think it's no big deal if you do it anyway. I mean, it's not like you actually KNOW the consequences. At worst, the other person you promised will just think you’re untrustworthy and if you mentioned the Guardians of the Royal Promise will come get you if you break it, maybe people would think it’s actually a big deal to break it.
