2025-08-19 14:50:22 +0000 UTC#SundayRundown A lot of people think this episode was supposed to be a backdoor pilot to get interest in a spinoff show. It was actually filmed as a full pilot for a spinoff they were fully planning to do. The original plan for Dwight in Season 9 was for him to leave the show halfway through and go to this new show for a short first season. That’s why a lot of Dwight’s stories this season were about him being unhappy. But NBC passed on this new show. So they changed it to be a regular episode of The Office. They cut out a bunch of the episode that mentioned Dwight leaving Dunder Mifflin and they added the Todd Packer storyline for the rest of the cast. While it would’ve been fun to see more of Dwight’s crazy world, I think the last half of Season 9 needed him around.
