Hello,
Gravity started from the idea of composition inspired by the sun and the moon. While reading about some characteristics of the sun, the idea of a vibrant, blonde, and warm woman crossed my mind. I pictured her as happy and full of high energy, and that sparked the idea of her running. However, just a good-looking woman would not provide enough depth to the composition, so the idea of planets as dogs came to mind. I believe this was inspired by an old picture I saved of Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter’s actor) walking with several dogs.
I really liked this picture, but I wasn’t sure what to do with it. I guess this was a good opportunity to try incorporating that scenario into an illustration.
After that, I spent a fair amount of time gathering references of women running. I was surprised by how many of them there were; I think people are very proud of exercising, which is why they take these pictures.
Finally, I listed the planets by their size and proximity to the sun so I could choose the dog breeds that best matched each planet. Among all of them, the color of the dogs’ fur also helped me decide.
I thought this would be a simple challenge since I’d be drawing dogs instead of humans, but it turned out that adding expressions through their eyes and eyebrows created a great way to distinguish their personalities.
Anyway, I’m sharing the process video for you to see more details about the technical execution. One last thing, accidentally, I closed Photoshop before saving the final version of this piece, so you might notice some small differences, like shadow shapes, the belt, color corrections, and other small details. I apologize if you were looking for these specifics in the file, but I’ll be here to answer any questions you have.
