My Process Video and Brushes! - Practice 77/78

Hey! Here are some thoughts behind my last practices, along with process video files and brushes. Subscribe to unlock!

Focal Points and Odd Perspectives

I was looking for pictures with unconventional perspectives, and I did like the composition of this one. Most of the complexity of the render was in the bird's face, and the rest was a bit more messy. I liked the shapes on the ice because I saw how I could build the texture with my brushes, way before starting the painting. I used these brushes for that end:

Kinetic and Geometric - Tentacle

I felt it would look interesting to replace the "suckers" of the tentacle with more circular geometric shapes. This repetition combined with different shadow positions creates a kinetic effect, almost hypnotizing in my opinion.

Cute but Dangerous, My Type - Gun

It's always nice to render some metallic materials, but in this case with a gun shape. I guess I found the little gun a bit cute and unconventional. There were plenty of contrast, black and white values, and slight color suggestions. The position of the gun was a bit odd, so that all sums up and caught my attention.

Let's Not Talk About Fur Anymore - Bear

This is an old picture I've found interesting. The first thought that popped into my mind was that if it was not for the glass dividing these two, the kid would be the bear's lunch. A bit dark, but I think many thought the same. Nevertheless, I liked the contrast between both sizes and colors as well.

I gotta say, this particular painting was a real pain in the ass. I did not find a way to simplify all the values in the bear's fur, and this is not the first time. I've been struggling with big animal fur for months already, but just recently I'm noticing the pattern. Someone suggested for me to make an article about this, and to be honest I should, once I figure out a way to solve this rendering issue effectively. In the meantime, I suggest you check the process video in case you struggle with this too. I can't promise there's a straight solution there, but it's the best I can do for now as I still am not sure how to articulate the solution into words.

High Contrast and Organic Shapes Don't Need Great Drawing Skills

Surprisingly enough, I thought this one would be a challenge, but it was not. I defined just the shape of the stairs with lines and proceeded to make a shape of the shadow. Outside the shadow shape it would be white and a few bright colors, but within, I've essentially painted the whole thing using just textured brushes and guessing the tone of the color according to the reference. This approach is surprisingly different from the ones I've done lately. I guess it's because the focal point is small and so contrasted that lines are not really visible, and the rest is so in the shadows that lines are not also important. Plus, every shape in this picture is very rough and chaotic, allowing me not to worry too much about accuracy, something I often rely on in the drawing.

Uncle Bacon

I simply wanted to have some fun with this one, I just like bacon.
