TALKIN' ABOUT with Joe and Tim: Comic Strips

Joe & Tim (Podcasting's Bellow & Stirfry) get together to do some talkin' about the comics page. Strips that delight, strips that baffle, the medium of the newspaper, and a few hints at TALKIN' ABOUTS yet to come.

Check out the attached comics page from the day of the recording! Not only do we REFERENCE the page...we ANALYZE it too kinda (we don't analyze really we just talk about it).

I also had that Smithsonian newspaper strips collection! & my memory of it is that you actually got the history of Blondie backwards -- Dagwood was from a rich family and Blondie was a burlesque dancer. Also, you mentioned Pogo briefly; anyone here who liked Bloom County but hasn't taken a good look at Pogo, definitely do -- it was Bloom County's dad in basically every artistic/narrative/character/thematic/political way. Fantagraphics has been putting out excellent collections of them.

Really good listen! With the mention of Bloom County and Opus I am forced to offer up my favorite Berkeley Breathed fact: did you know he was the author of the book which was adapted into Mars Needs Moms, which means that he is directly responsible for Disney losing 100 million dollars?

This somehow reset my stress levels to “10-years-old-eating-toast-before-school”, a true gift.

This is a really good listen so far, as someone who also started out reading comic strips it's great to hear other fans discuss them

Arthur Rehak

Jared Flood

I would love to hear what you both think of Lasagna Cat! This is so enjoyable, literally could listen to you all talk about things you are passionate about for hours. :)
