Talkin' About LOONEY TUNES with Branson and Carly!

Carly and Branson let their hair down for once and talk about what may be their biggest shared influence: Looney Tunes! The conversation spans the famed directors of Termite Terrace, the not-as-famed writers, background painters (Maurice Noble — look him up!) and gags, gags, gags! Plus, Branson shares one of his trademark "controversial opinions"...ooh, what could it be?? This episode clocks in at nearly an hour and a half, which is, actually, a show of restraint!

Music is "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" by Shep Fields and His Rippling Rhythm Orchestra.

Took me... too long to realize the name of man you were talking about was Tex Avery, and not Tech Savory

Been waiting for this ever since I devoured the Reese Reviews (tm) of classic animation on Letterboxd, didn't even know this was gonna be here! I just became a patron! What a delight! Wow!!

Agreed, this has been such a joy to listen to while I've been thoroughly burnt out. It's such a pleasure to listen to episodes like these, I love Talkin About. And Maurice Noble is such a heavy hitter. If anyone has not looked him up, HIGHLY recommend, and if you're remotely interested in animation, the book "The Noble Approach" is an absolute masterclass in animation design thinking.

This "Talkin' About" RULES, thanks y'all! Looney Tunes are such an inspiration to me and its obvious from the podcast that it is for you too, so fun and interesting to hear you dive deeper into that.

OK I listened to this and it was great. I also remember watching Old Glory as a kid and thinking, wow, this isn't funny -- but also noting how most of the people in the Revolutionary War seemed to have no eyes and also how there was no "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. I think I have to go listen to Branson's take on Space Jam now.

One utterly delightful note about Old Glory from the Wikipedia page: "During the late 1960s, Old Glory was regularly screened between rock acts at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Many of the Fillmore's patrons drew great amusement from a pig saluting the American flag, as "pig" in 1960s slang was a derogatory term for a police officer and his saluting the flag was a symbol of the kind of America most people were against at the time."

Haven't listened to this yet but giving it a like anyway - always felt like most of the people involved in the classic Looney Tunes never got their due

Also I absolutely LOVE this. Like hearing you all talk about things you are passionate about literally makes my day. You all mentioned how these cartoons helped out during the Great Depression, honestly these podcasts and talks help me through what feels like a spiritual great depression in 2020. You all always make me smile, regardless of what the update is about. Thank you for all you do. I truly mean this.

According to what I researched (20 minute rabbit hole on google and reading tons of stuff) Elmer Fudd seems to have evolved from Egghead because the studio wanted to change the appearance around 19...37? But eventually they did just get rid of Egghead completely due to what appeared of the drop in popularity of the character.
