Talkin' About THE RED TAILED HAWK IN THE PARK BY MY APARTMENT with Ali and Tim

Ali and Tim each live near different incredible parks. Both parks have Red Tailed Hawks.

Ali and Tim break down why seeing that Red Tailed Hawk gives them such pleasure. Using birds (profoundly) as an anchor, these two trained conversationalists talk about walks, neighborhoods, animals, memories, books, feelings, and the things on which we rely to bring us  contentment. Like the very birds that inspired the dialogue, this conversation is ungrounded.

Scissor-tailed flycatcher. An S tier bird.

So far, this is my favorite one of these. Makes me want to play Wingspan again

Jeffrey E Morton

late to listen but loved this conversation. Seagulls are my guys, forever, but I also got very into Magnificent Frigatebirds on a kayaking trip in mexico. and Turkey Vultures, had a lot of those where I grew up, and also backed the beautiful Foxloft pins - this was a good reminder to get a few more. there's also a Blue Jay that lives down the road from me with leucistic markings, so it's mostly pure white with splashes of blue on its wings and tail, that's always cool to see.

Kirsa

I’m very fond of King Fishers. I like guys with bright red or orange feathers.

Melody Sarian

Well this was one or the most delightful things I've ever listened to

I am just about to turn 31 but still love everything MCU. So by Tim's logic I will be forever 29. Thank you for this gift

We had a grey heron visit our back garden a few times last year. So good.

I just moved across town to a more wooded area. Hoping it’ll have nice bird life. My partner has installed a feeder on one of our windows. At our old house, I frequently saw/heard a woodpecker in one of our neighbor’s trees across the street. I’d also noticed an owl when I’d go out at night in the past few months. Never saw it, but I’m a little sad to say goodbye to it.

This was great! Partway through I realized I should get outside and see some birds myself, so I listened to the end of the episode sitting in the yard and watching a downy woodpecker and some house finches in a tree nearby. Cool to hear the shoutout to Visionary Vultures - I backed that project too, and the pins are gorgeous!

My senior year of college, I had a class in the a new arts building, which was easily the tallest building around and therefore had attracted a family of turkey vultures. Cut to halfway through a class when the professor called on me because I looked so enthusiastic and I had to explain that I had no idea what was going on in our discussion because I’d been admiring the big bald bird on the windowsill for the last 15 minutes

I remember being a kid and seeing a MASSIVE creature flying down along and across the road and being absolutely convinced it was a pterodactyl! It left a massive poo in the middle of the road that was twice the size of my feet. I ran to tell my mom who said it must have been a blue heron (they are local to my area in New York State), but 25+ years later I'm still not convinced. That was a dinosaur I saw that day! Also a lot of chicken behavior is very clearly a hold over from their dinosaur ancestry. Watching them SWARM to ravage an unlucky frog or mouse is TERRIFYING!

Wonderful talkin about!

Maaaan there's so much I wanna talk about birds! Didn't realise how much til this episode. I'll try to limit it to just a few and a recommendation. (also I'm on my phone which means I don't know how to go down a line, so sorry if this gets messy) - Australia has this reputation for being a terrifying hellhole where everything wants to kill you. But if you want to see what terrifies Australians, visit during swooping season. - My last job was in an office tower in the CBD in Brisbane. From my desk and the office balcony I had a great view of the city hall, which had weird metal cage ball thing on the top of the clock tower. A pair of crows built a nest inside the cage ball thing and raised at least two chicks. I would feed the crows on the balcony, although they never came down while anyone was outside. But a highlight of my day was putting some meat or fruit out and watching them watching me and then come soaring down as soon as I went inside. Loved them crows. - Another highlight of that job was a livestream of a peregrine falcon nesting site in Melbourne. They've been coming back for several years, but iirc last year was their first success. My last year at that job they got SO CLOSE - 4 eggs, 3 hatched, 2 fledged, 1 flew, but sadly, ultimately, none of the chicks made it :( It's heartbreaking, nervewracking, fascinating and adorable. It's closed for the season, but if you want to bookmark it for that next: https://www.367collinsfalcons.com.au/ - I'm now working at a dinosaur museum, and there's SO MANY birds. Highlights include another family of cheeky bugger crows, a regularly seen emu dad and chicks, and wild budgerigars and cockatiels. Speaking of... - Birds is dinosaurs. - Finally, if you're interested in learning about birds I've gotta recommend one of my favourite podcasts, Common Descent. They've done two episodes about the evolution of birds and one about parrots. If you're interested, here's their first birb episode: https://www.patreon.com/posts/episode-37-of-19499107

One time I was out on walk without my glasses (I'm wildly nearsighted) and I got excited because I saw a bird in the distance I had never seen before. It was a large and black with a brown chest and was squawking as it flied. As it flew closer to me and I was able to see it more clearly it turned out that this was, not in fact a new bird, it was actually a very large crow carrying a still alive rat in it's beak. That's my favorite bird experience, but my favorite bird is the redwing blackbird. very pretty but also tremendous assholes. I've seen pairs of redwing Blackbirds try and fight Herons and Hawks because they got within a mile of their nest (the Hawk was very annoyed, and the Heron was too preoccupied trying to fist to care about these small angry birds) One last Bird memory: I saw a Cardinal eat a cicada emerging from it's shell

Nico

I've been enjoying the great tailed grackles posturing outside and being loud as shit.

Stephanie Taylor

Birds are great! I remember working at an old sanctuary that we would study bird migrations and would often be tasked with documenting any birds we may have seen that were unusual during our work hours. It was fun. :)

Michael Nestick

Seconded this! There needs to be an email we can send bird pictures to!

Michael Nestick

i love this... there’s a blue jay that comes by my house every spring/summer that we named clarence who absolutely fucking hates my brother and will attack him whenever he goes outside and we have no idea why he just does not like him. like sometimes we’ll look into our backyard and just see this enormous blue jay in the tree staring at the door waiting for him i’m literally obsessed with this bird .. anyway my bird of choice is an albatross because that’s not a bird it’s a muppet!!!! honorary mention to budgies because i have 2!!

Emily Kelly

My bird of choice is the turkey vulture, because they're everywhere in my area, and more importantly, they're fuckin HUGE. also, one time a family of quail got into our garage and we had to carefully get them back out. it's honestly weird, because I haven't seen any since then.

jacob kessler

This conversation was so restorative for my mental health LOL. It also reminded me of a really cool time in Florida a couple years ago where we got to see ospreys diving and catching fish around us in the ocean, so close by. It was a really cool thing to experience! And ospreys are really cool birds! The Wingspan board game is also nice and chill if anyone out there wants to learn more about birds, and also play a board game at the same time.

Caitlin Cadieux

I love this! I don’t know much about the fast and the furious and I don’t know about the bachelor, so this Talkin About is right up my alley!

Birds, the queens of nature's chessboard

kgo

I grew up next to a wooded area and we had a family of red tailed hawks that lived in them. Listening to their cries ring out on warm summer days always gave me this sense of calmness and joy. They were all named Reddy.

Dr. Yolo McSwag

Here's a real question for Tim: can we send you pictures of birds?

Alec Brimmer

RTH is a top tier bird. This is good content.
