Ah, the five of cups. One of the most famous cards in tarot. Most people learn about the iconic "five of cups" long before they learn about tarot, so entrenched is this image in popular culture. But the card is so much more than its Michael Jordan sized reputation would have you believe. It's actually a metaphor for when there are five cups. You see, people in medieval times didn't like when there were five cups. They much preferred the reasonable Beatles sized "four cups" or the (at the time) unthinkably large bounty that six cups would afford. Five was considered the wrong amount. That's why this card is a symbol of despair, of loss. Has something bad recently happened to you? Well this is tarot's way of mocking you about it. Seems harsh to me. I probably would've invented a nicer deck of cards if it was up to me. But it isn't. And that sucks for me. Fills me with despair, really. Makes me unbelievably sa- hey look at that! Maybe this card is mocking me as well! Fair's fair!
