It's very good, and I think from the little I know of his tastes he'd really enjoy it. The book pretends to be the manuscript of a possibly-true story that has been found and made its way to the author, Alasdair Gray, and it has a lot of fun with various bits of literary artifice and tropes of the Georgian/Victorian era, from the epistolary form to the interrupted marriage ceremony. Gray was a fascinating writer and also a visual artist, so he also has fun including historical portraits of his characters that he has created and that sort of thing. Would highly recommend it. It's probably better known in the UK, and here in Scotland particularly where Gray is a bit of a national treasure.
