Yes, this was 1994 and smoking was definitely allowed indoors back then, and even up until 10-15 years ago in some places (though usually the smoking and non-smoking areas are separated, like in restaurants). Also, I know Chandler did that on purpose to distract them, but none of that is hardly comparable to smoking since some of it is not something one can control (like Monica's laugh) or something that can harm someone else. If you don't care about your own health that's sad but still your choice. However, second hand smoke is extremely harmful so it's not even just about YOUR health. Also, not harmful but I HATE how just being near someone who's smoking gets the smell all over me and my clothes. I've never smoked and have no interest in it because it's disgusting. But I get some people become addicted so it's hard. That whole storyline is funny because I think most of the cast smoked at the time (and maybe some still do) but it's sad because of Matthew Perry's (Chandler) addiction problems IRL (even though that was alcohol and pills but it still works the same way). And yeah, his physical comedy was great but he was also very good at improv as a lot of Chandler's lines were. David Schwimmer (Ross) is even better at physical comedy, especially once it gets to S4 and onwards. "Omnipotent", as in someone who has unlimited power or authority, like a God. Joey thought they meant "impotent", as in someone who struggles with getting an erection.
