So, this isn't a spoiler, but definitely around this time there was consideration given to Friends ending sooner than it did, but that didn't end up happening. So maybe some of these callback jokes were written in while they were thinking it might come to a close soon. Or maybe something is coming up where they need to lay that groundwork for new viewers - back when it was common to start watching something midway through a show's run. I don't remember if anything like that is coming up though. The greenscreen in the boat episode always sends me especially given how high budget Friends was at this time! The cast were on big salaries by S7

2026-01-22 23:56:54 +0000 UTCfriends is a good show, but it has problems. overusing jokes that are kind of low hanging fruit (chandler is gay, monica used to be fat, joey is stupid etc) is one of them. so, you said a thing i do want to talk about, but i think you need to get a bit farther before i can.

The first two episodes were really good but these two are just okay, and I think it's because the B plot in both is mostly just kind of lame gay and fat jokes. And I don't even feel like it is something that aged poorly because maybe they are offensive now, they just aren't funny. They're just sort of lazy. But there are also some really good jokes too. Mainly from Phoebe. Phoebe might be the one carrying these two episodes. And also, Monica still looks so good.

2026-01-22 19:53:01 +0000 UTCI agree that Monica fat jokes had lessened significantly up until now, but Chandler gay jokes were a thing every season I feel like. Even at the final episodes of s6, Richard tells Monica something like, I know you're with Chandler and if you say he's straight, I'll believe you. And a few episodes before that when Phoebe was writing her books, there was a joke about the colour of Chandler's shirt being girly.

The part where it took Monica so long to learn how to tell time was especially funny because of all the characters she would be the one upright to be on time, get there early, or just plain make a strict schedule for everything.
