Columbia House has been around since the 1950s. I subscribed to it the 70s...got my 11 free 8-track tapes for a penny and never paid for anything else. And indeed, nobody ever came after me for it.

The catch was that by accepting the deal, you were signing up for several months of payments in the club. The thing is, nobody ever paid, really. Everybody I knew around my age had their 1 cent Columbia House CDs, nobody ever paid for anything else, and nobody ever came after them for it. So, basically, Archer's one example of getting himself out of a jam was getting away with the exact same rule breaking as every other kid in his generation.
