They revealed at RTX 2019 that they originally approached Tatiana Maslany to play Val, largely because of her brilliant character acting in Orphan Black. While she said the role would be phenomenal, she specifically asked if they had approached any gender fluid actors first. She suggested Asia Kate Dillon and basically said that if Dillon wasn't interested in the role then she would take it instead. Then she put the RT production company in touch with Dillon's agent to review the script. Maslany essentially casted Dillon as Val as a result. To be clear I think Maslany would have also killed that role but was thrilled, and a bit surprised, to learn of the camaraderie in the under-represented parts of the industry. I've loved Tatiana as an artist for years but learning this made me have such a larger appreciation for her as a person. On an only slightly related note, if any one here has not yet watched Orphan Black, you absolutely should. It was a crime that it took four years for them to give her an Emmy for her work on that show.
