Chechnya's Bizzare Ban on Musical Tempo
Added 2024-04-11 18:47:26 +0000 UTCBack at some YouTube! I saw this story a couple days ago, and I knew that I needed to weigh in on it, it was too good. Chechnya apparently just banned all tempo outside of 80-116bpm.
This is probably just a clever way to make sure that Lezginka is legal (which is crazy fast, but whose half time tempo fits within this window) but foreign music like House and Techno does not. That said, it was still fun to talk to Dr. Leigh VanHandel about all things music cognition.

I've always done the thing when futzing with a song where I pick the count that's comfortable for me to learn in segments. So... Yeah. It's not like notation really dictates feel. Dictator dictating bpm.... Like you just claim you're counting every 5 or 2 or 27 or 1.25 beats.... Until the dudes with guns show up .. sad.
