Delicious in Dungeon - Fundamentals of Character Design

IT'S HERE!!!!!!! My Dungeon Meshi video is now up for you guys to feast your eyes upon 😂 Things might be a little flashier with a new intro and outro (do let me know what you guys think of those changes). But overall, I'm so happy with this video.

Character design has been talked about within the manga community, but I always feel like it's on a very... Base-level scale? In this video I wanted to talk about how Ryoko Kui finesses her character designs in Dungeon Meshi because of how vital they are to its storytelling, as well as a beautiful variation of diversity you don't see too often in this industry.

Thank you so, so much for the wait! Editing this one just seemed to take ages. Between the research (and this is technically the longest manga I've covered and analysed) on top of nearly over 400 different images and panels... It was a stuff one haha.

The subtitles aren't available right now, but will be when I release this video publicly tomorrow. And i'll be sure to update you guys again soon of what the next video is 🤫 (Unless you're in the discord, of which I'm going to sneakily post the thumbnail)

Hope everyone's doing okay, and I'll catch you in the next one!

Ah, thank you so much!!! And I'd agree with you actually, the form v function aspect is very rarely talked about on yt, gave me more reason to dig into the topic. I hope it can help your friend with the thesis (wishing her the best of luck!). And I'm so happy to hear you personally found it interesting too, thank you ☺️

Just watched this video and wanted to support your channel! It was awesome seeing such an important part of character design be talked about. I feel like most similar videos really gloss over the form vs function and worldbuilding aspect of character design. Ah, I literally sent this to my friend doing her thesis on creature design in video games because it was so interesting and helpful. This is super inspirational, and I am totally going to refer back to this as I do ref sheets for creatures and characters c:

Well. Ive tried to draw traditionaly for years. Being half blind, Ive felt that I just couldnt "understand" the process as well as others. Seeing your vids (and watching Blue Period) Ive realused tgat I might not be so bad as I think. Since I can pick stuff out. Creatively, I write and sing. My hope is to illustrate my characters. My current project is basicaly; "What if Buffy, but undead?". And my friends say its coming along nicely.

Omg, thank you so much for sharing! I appreciate that a lot, and what area to you specify in, digital/traditional/3d?

The video was gorgeous. The manga cutouts and animations were lovely but the amount of context they add to the video is profound. It as also a wonderful exploration of the characters; there's so much more that goes into it than I ever even considered. The parts about Laius' neck armor and the drawings of the other characters from Chilchuck's perspective both left an especially strong impression of how much consideration went into it all. Not sure why but they both struck a special chord :) I always love seeing the character / race / outfit explorations that Kui does, it's so wild to see the characters transmuted with each other's traits or just wild styles like street clothes but you can still totally tell what the mixes are. So well done.
