Keith Haring: When Capitalist Consumerism Fails an Artist

So hey, SURPRISE VIDEO!

I've been wanting to do a video on Keith Haring for a *long* time now, he's one of my absolute favourites and I love everything that he stood for.

I'm sure most are familiar with his work, but I wanted to make a video that not only gives context to his political standings and his willingness to spread awareness of important topics, but just how companies have completely taken advantage of his name and work.

(Disclaimer: this is by no means shaming people who have bought merch that has Haring's work on it, I myself has shirt and pajamas of such). This is a 'callout' to already profiteering businesses who leach of an artists work, whilst failing to mention all the issues he stood for (or, at least, on their product pages).

The Gravity Falls video is still going on! I actually got 80% of this video done as I was doing the HnK video (I used this video as a break from manga editing). So no time has been lost on the development of that.

Let me know what you think of the video, it's a bit of a different one from me - but I loved every minute of it!

Comments

I need to put the sources in the video link this morning, but there was *so* many documentaries he was attached to - that one in particular is a favourite though 😊Hope you enjoyed the video!

I was lucky enough to go to one of his exhibitions a few years back, it really pains you to know just how exploited his art has become. His name is definitely becoming more recognised, thankfully, but at what cost 🥲

Whoa! The documentary I saw was the one in the beginning of your video!

Oh!! What a delightful surprise! I am so stoked to watch this. It’s been, oh my god, twenty years since I last saw a documentary about him.

Dino

Wow, I've definitely seen the art around and I knew Keith Haring's name but I never knew the life story. To have your life's work of equality and betterment subverted and used as a tool for consumerism... that is brutal poetic injustice :(
