Basic Inking

Click here to return to the course index

Now that we have the details sketched out and to our linking, we need to start inking the map.  Because I overlap my topography features, I start from the bottom and work my way upward.  As that’s not the easiest thing to do, please don’t feel you need to do the same.  Again, this course is meant to give you a behind-the-scenes look into how I make my maps and to encourage you to try it while finding your own style.  That said, let’s watch the video of me inking the Raven’s Call map.

OPTIONAL HOMEWORK: Time to start inking your map.  Take your time, move slowly & purposefully across your map, and relax.  This is just for practice and to help you develop your skills.

It was a white gel pen. They're great for "erasing" thin ink lines, however, they don't work well on thick lines and don't take color well. So if you plan on coloring the piece, pay extra attention to that area. :)

Wow, incredible. I noticed you 'erased' some ink around 16:24 in the video. What did you use? Was that just a white out type of pen or something else?

Wonderful video, Deven! I enjoy the commentary. The process is so important to me to see, so this is awesome. (The wheels in my brain are turning now.)
