The Compass Rose

Below I show you how to make a basic compass rose for your maps and then how to expand upon it just a bit to make it more interesting.

Hover over the image to see instructions.

1. Use a stencil to create a large circle.

2. Draw a line across the center using the stencil’s guidelines and a ruler.

3. Repeat.

4. Keep repeating until you have all eight points marked.

5. Add a small circle around the center point.  (

6. Draw a line from the outer circle to the inner circle from one line to another.

7. Repeat for all the lines.

8. Now for the other side.

9. Start inking the lines you want to keep. I decided to shorten 4 points to only an inch out from the center. Erase any lines you aren’t going to use.

10. Shade, thatch, or fill in one side of each point if desired.

11. Using the circle stencil, add two circles around the center, one smaller than the other (you can make them as close or far apart).

12. Again with the stencil, create a smaller outer circle.

13. Using the indicators on the stencil, create evenly spaced directional marks.

14. Add your directional lettering and you're done.
