Apple Pay poking it's Apple in.

Hello everyone. Soon Patreon and indeed creators on Patreon will have to start paying fees for members who join using Apple Pay via the Patreon iOS app. This will take me a while to wrap my head around, and won't impact current members (I believe). However I may have to take a route to have a second pricing for each tier for people who chose to join via the Patreon app with Apple Pay as their payment method to cover to cost of the fees (this is Patreon's suggestion) along with people who join via the browser with a different method. I've no idea how this will impact current members who joined via the app or use Apple Pay, but it's possible an increase in monthly fees may happen.

I'm in no way happy about this and it feels like a spanner in the works but I want to do my best to be transparent about it and navigate to a solution that everyone is happy with it.

So far, the only thing I can think of outside of having, for example, a £5 a month tier or £7.50 if you join via the iOS app and pay with Apple Pay, is to simply ask that no one joins using this method, and instead log into their account via the web browser, and switch to another payment method, unless the extra fees are just for people joining via the app, and joining via the browser but paying with Apple Pay doesn't also incur fees. Ug. It's very confusing and annoying.

The Patreon App isn't really that good anyway. I use it mainly to quickly respond to DMs but otherwise I don't use it, but if that's how you joined this page, you need to know what it going to happen, and in the event that you are suddenly paying more and aren't happy, but want to stay a member, I hope you would consider just switching to another payment method via the web browser.

I guess we will all find out together, and I hope it won't put any of you off. Changing my prices really fills me with dread, it was scary enough switching from dollars to pounds. I hope you can all understand and I would greatly appreciate any feedback whilst this is happening and if your payments get affected.

Or maybe nothing will happen and this is just all me having a bit of a panic.

Anyway BOO Apple BOO (even thought I own like 5 of your things).

Thanks for your time and understanding.

I'm writing to Patreon now to get a better run down. There's also this article if anyone wants to read. https://support.patreon.com/hc/en-us/articles/31147260274957-What-to-expect-with-iOS-in-app-purchases?utm_campaign=241031-IAPSB-Creators-on-SB&utm_medium=email&utm_source=iterable

As a non Apple user it's not something that's going to impact me personally but I think being upfront and open about the situation, as you have been, and giving an alternative is definitely the right way to go. Fingers crossed it doesn't become too much of a pain for either you or those impacted
