2023-06-18 05:37:26 +0000 UTCThe Japan/German thing is most obviously a leftover of World War 2 but even before that Japan took a lot of influence from Germany in their military, education and law. In the 19th century Germany was really on top of their game and Japan was looking to improve theirs, so they essentially copied the German university system AND the German medical system. The most important foreign language to Japan at that time was German. Then World War 2 happened and America essentially replaced most German influence with English/American culture and language.
