The Imagines Saga: Prologue & Ashwood Manor

Part one of the classic Imagines episode segments! I actually totally forgot these were spread out over bonus and main episodes. Here's our introduction to the concept, and then the story that we thought we'd never top (before immediately finding even funnier ones): Benedict Cumberbatch's wacky murder mansion.

Legally, the longest-lasting protections for likeness rights in the U.S. expire 100 years after death. In any other sense? Who can say

why IS hamilton allowed

Oh sweet! the classic imagines segments always brighten my day

In that case, I was wondering about when, exactly, public figures licensing rights expired, or whether their descendants inherited those rights. After all, a lot of descendants are very concerned about the portrayal of their ancestors. You're right that the rules are a little bit different about dead people, though, especially depending on the state. In California, the celebrity rights act extends protections for public figures' likenesses to about 70 years after their death!

why would hamilton not be allowed though? i feel like the rules would be different about dead people

You may have gotten enough responses when you first started the imagines saga, but likeness rights and usage get... weird in written publications. The U.S. publishing industry is famously litigious, but for some reason, the rules are a lot looser when it comes to using the likenesses of public figures in writing. As long as the author avoids libel or slander, they’re given a weird amount of liberty. That said, laws change from state to state because of course they do. Found that out after blearily googling "why is hamilton allowed," and then getting lost in a copyright law research haze
