Episode 161: A New York Slice!

Cursed Child stage play.

We're in the big apple, baby! We took a plane/time machine into the past to see a performance of the Cursed Child in New York with the original London cast. We... had a surprising time! We dig into all of our detailed thoughts: what met our expectations, what surprised us, and what let us down. This 8th story has been a real roller coaster for us, and you might be surprised on where we end up on this one! What main character did we find ourselves hugely disappointed in? Did the effects and production dazzle us as much as the reviews said they would? Did Imogen Heap's jukebox musical score delight us as much as the Voldemort Day video did? Find out all this and more on this week's Shrieking Shack!

NOTE: This is the wackiest of warnings to give but I edited a car horn honking into the intro--so if you happen to drive while you listen to this show be aware that yes, that honk came from the podcast!!

We're taking a week off to plan our next moves, but we'll be back week after next with some Sloper Content and more!

Comments

Having finally returned from 2019 to see Cursed Child and catching up on this, my thoughts are... 1. So I only did a little bit of acting at the end of college myself, but the majority of my college friends were super involved with the theatre groups on campus. So I saw a lot of plays in college. And thanks to watching it, I've realized that fully activating my Live Theatre Brain (aka the ability to not be bothered by how someone acting in public is just inherently kinda embarrassing, and just have fun watching it because that's ok) requires me to be able to think "wow, my friends and acquaintances sure are talented". So the random dance transition scenes were really not doing anything for me. Otherwise, I think I pretty much lined up with your thoughts on the actors and how it compared to the script. 2. I had already been thinking about this pre-watching play, but that scene in the past where they watch the deaths really is *weird*. And for as indulgent as it is with the parents' deaths audio and all, I'm confused why it didn't similarly indulge regarding the prophecy. Cause... that's the whole point of it, I think, awkwardly matching the prophecy from earlier- "unseen children murder their fathers"? And if that's the reasoning, it's not like spelling that out is inherently a great idea, but it would be /something/. Anyway, if nothing else I'm glad to have finally read/watched it to see what it actually /is/ thanks to this, since it was a much more interesting kind of messy than I expected. Though I have already been cursed with having to say "ok, yes, I don't think it's good, but it's not that it's 'fanfic', it's ___", "that plot detail is not actually *that* out of left field in-context of this thing somehow being 6 entire hours long", etc. to friends so that's just a burden I have to live with now.
