It's game time! Where we dropping? Well, it turns out that in the Hunger Games arena, everyone drops in the same spot no matter what. Will Katniss score some good loot, or will she get taken out by a guy warping around on a laggy wireless collection?
That's right, we're finally in the Hunger Games section of the Hunger Games. We're having a great time too--these chapters went down smooth, and we have a brisk discussion about Peeta's many faces, Katniss's toxic gamer chat, and the gritty realism of someone sprinting while throwing six ka-bars. Finally, we take it to our new third segment for a round of spotting the fake dystopian novel premise!

Yes I was thinking that too! That server was so much fun, and was for sure my first intro to battle royal style games. It must have been in like 2012 or 2013, right? I remember choosing Minecraft hunger games over spending time with my high school girlfriend, lol. I also remember there being a super smash bros server that I put a lot of hours into, can’t remember if that was run by the same people or not.

2023-06-12 12:01:02 +0000 UTCHonestly I just remember the PUBG battle royale mod being the cambrian explosion of this genre. That dropped, then got popular and became a real thing, then Fortnite dropped and really took off. I think the issue in tracing the thoroughline is, "was PUBG inspired by Battle Royale strictly? The concept only as it exists in the zeitgeist? Hunger Games (and associated mods/fangames)?" The exact path traced probably varies from person to person.

That was HUGE a couple years ago, before any other battle royale game was huge, and i feel like it opened a lot of peoples eyes so how fun these are to play!

Two things are made clear in the way Katniss talk about Rue and Thresh: 1. Katniss doesn’t appear to have seen a black person before 2. Katniss has no concept of what a “black person” is. She has to describe the individual features that tell the reader that the character is black is stead of just saying “She was black” Point one is just weird name because there are black Appalachians, but point two is really interesting. it implies that Panem is post-racial, to the point that the concept of separate race categories is gone, which is weirdly utopian for such a fucked up society. But it makes sense when you consider the degree to which media just did not talk about race in 2008. acknowledging it at all was this huge, dangerous thing. Def would have been seen as wading into way more dangerous waters than anything else in the book.

It'd be like the Raiders of the Lost Ark or Shovel Knight of YA, and I hope that analogy makes sense - if you ever feel compelled to continue further from the allotted two chapters I doubt anyone would mind, but also I think it's also fair to draw this out as much as you want (gives more opportunities for maddening predictions)

2023-06-04 17:36:14 +0000 UTCI have to imagine that the reputation of the hunger games is the way it is because most of the people who read it were probably teenagers, or had migrated from the relatively killstreak free Harry Potter and whatnot. I’m getting flashbacks to posts about how Attack on Titan is the most violent anime ever from kids who had never watched anything outside of the usual shonen jump stuff. Their heads would explode if they even tried watching an Elden Lied amv!

That and the fact that death games and death game adjacent ideas have been around for ages, even before Battle Royale gave it the shorthand name. There's just as much Running Man in this as there is Battle Royale, y'know?

I don't know how honest this is, but I think it's worth mentioning, since Battle Royale has been brought up so many times, that Suzanne Collins has repeatedly said she had never heard of Battle Royale before writing the Hunger Games. She does admit to being inspired by a story, though, and said her main inspiration for the Games was the myth of the Minotaur, specifically the youths, seven boys and seven girls, sent from Athens as a punishment for Athens' crimes against Crete, to be placed in the labyrinth and sacrificed to the Minotaur. I actually do believe her, personally, but I get people who don't. Anyway, I'll just leave you with this. If Rue may be Rue-thless, Cinna may be Cinna-ster.

They definitely made it much more textual than the original script. Overall it was relatively enjoyable but Delphini stole the show for sure. My sister hated her and didnt get why I liked her lol

2023-06-03 22:57:45 +0000 UTCI have a report from the Harry Potter battlefront. Was in NYC this weekend and saw Cursed Child. Pretty large audience, but not sold out. Definitely a vibe of "magical" excitement, like, people who had read the books as kids or when they came out and hadn't really thought much about them since, and not really plugged into the author's various atrocities. I had pretty low expectations so I mostly enjoyed it. The dementors were very scary in person. Albus and Scorpius made a cute couple, and that seemed like a pretty textual interpretation of their relationship.

District 12 was in a region known as Appalachia.” The train is also said to be high speed which is why they were able to travel so quickly.
