SHHG! Episode 7: Hatchet 64

The Hunger Games chapters 12 & 13

We went to the movies! We talk a bit about the new Spider-man movie (no spoilers) and the trailers we saw ahead of it before discussing our action-packed pair of chapters for the week. Katniss is mostly looking for water in these ones, but there are also some dastardly villains chasing her who have been trained from birth for combat (as long as it's not ranged combat or tree climbing). We still find a lot to talk about though--sports channel graphics packages, wrestling personas, reality tv, and more!

NO FUCKING WAY. ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WAY. HOLY FUCKING SHIT. BRB ADDING CROW TO MY CART AND CHECKING IF THE INTERNET ARCHIVE HAS A COPY OF THIS MOTHERFUCKER. HOLY SHIT. "THE CHAIN GAIN BREAKFAST CLUB" MY GOD. MY *GOD*. ALCATRAZ 2.0. IN THE SAME WORLD AS-- I wonder if the Indigenous reclamation graffiti is still up in this world. A SERIES?!????? Bye. Fire the canon for me, they got me, gal.

Without hearing the answer yet: from the second somebody referenced Elton John in their username, I know XeeCee wrote that one, no matter what Liz wills. There's no way any of those books acknowledge that gay people exist, especially not if they aren't even premised on soulmates (in which case there is MAAAAAYBE one secret bad guy gay, but he's a very minor character & does exist in the same world as Elton John). Fabulous satirical premise of how copaganda excuses the immorality of the punitive justice system w Twitch & court TV as influences, super well done! I'll comment again if I'm forced to eat crow on this.

if you want to watch some incredible animation check out the stuff masaaki yuasa has done! night is short walk on girl are both incredibly cool visually. he also did devilman crybaby and keep your hands off eizouken if you watched those, they were pretty big in anime spaces when they came out. and are also interesting animation wise

I have recently watched a bunch of seasons of Survivor for the first time and that context in my brain is driving me nuts with the clear inspirations she took without effectively tailoring it to the setting. Teaming up with competitors is necessary in Survivor because people get kicked off or win based on votes from other competitors; you HAVE to have numbers on your side to last, even if you know you'll have to go against each other eventually. In a murder game, though, the "Safety In Numbers" strat reeeeeally doesn't translate, at least not for the kids who are supposedly hyper-competitive specially trained killers. anyway kudos to you two for not having my particular brand of brain poison because i know i'd have brought up danganronpa a few dozen times by now and hate myself each time i did it.

Sarah Anderson

It also destroys the collective punishment concept, because normal people aren’t worried about getting randomly selected.

Ryan

Does every sector have one person who's training to be a career tribute? Doesn't having dozens of people try to volunteer at once kind of detract from the message the Capital is trying to send?

Gregory

This is the second podcast this week I've listened to that brought up the Hatchet sequels

Beetle

Yes, that's my bad! I've rearranged my desk and mic setup recently and I've been having a hell of a time finding the right balance with the compressor settings again with the new mic placement etc. Workin on it!

The Shrieking Shack

The existence of career tributes kind of breaks the “put your name in the cup more times” system, because people in those districts can just do it an unlimited number of times and get infinite free food and fuel from the gov’t, knowing that they’ll never get drawn because a career will volunteer.

Ryan

Brian's Winter is hilarious too because it's an alternate reality Hatchet sequel where he didn't get rescued as early and had to survive the winter. Basically an admission that nobody liked the weird river trip story and we're getting back to what you love. The other later sequels also disregard the river. I can't think of any other series that retcons out an entire book and carries on from there.

Meh

A bold new direction once they finish Misericorde

Gregory

They should have set the tree on fire tbh.

Sam Harrison

Would like to throw this out there: I do think it'd be a good idea to read the main trilogy without trying to find another big YA thing to dip your feet into; I think the Hunger Games is more fertile ground, content-wise, than Twilight was. The amount of interesting stuff, good and bad, only increases as the series goes on, and unlike Twilight it happens at a reasonable pace

Lambda

very difficult for me to recall 99 percent of what happened in puss in boots the last wish but consider: the villain is a hot wolf

sam

I'd straight up pay Xeecee to write the "getting your license at 16 but mad max" hunger games rip off LOL

Alterstil

yall should choose one of these hunger games rip offs to actually read for a bonus episode 😂

sarah

Certainly not mad at your interpretation, but that was very much not my reading. I saw him as one of those characters who's dynamic arc made him a co-protagonist, while also being the antagonist to the other protagonist. Anyway, I recommended it less for the story/characters and more for the idea of that level of creativity and freedom in animation applied to an original story that isn't part of an established IP.

Keith

I had my "screaming at the podcast" moment with IT'S GOLDENEYE!!! IT'S FUCKING GOLDENEYE!!! The mounting pain of "wait, a junkyard full of statues? ...Soviet scientists???" and then you mentioned "The Facility" and I was in a frenzy. When you finally said it I popped off in a very real sense

Kzinssie

There's a lot to like in that movie but it was completely ruined for me by the absolutely rancid dad character and the way it constantly falls over itself to tell you how great he is

Kzinssie

i've been thinking about your realisation that hungry games is actually a wild pulpy adventure story and from what i remember from when it was big that seemed to be everyones understanding of it but i guess the kids that read this as their First Big Book probably skewed the perception of the series becase the political revolution stuff stood out because this was the first proper story they encountered and understood a message in or something

Polly

Fantastic news: there are nearly 50 pages of #MurderTrending available to preview. I just read the first chapter and it was so terrible and so funny. Bonus episode when?

Allison

The Mitchells vs the Machines might be the animated feature you're looking for. Good sober(ish) and on acid

Keith

✅️ i put it on hold thank you for the rec!

kam

i need to go read murdertrending

kam

I think you also have to consider TLC pivoting hard into exploitative and shocking media and the influence that had on what reality TV and celebrity TV in the 2000s was. The Duggars had a whole god damn brand that TLC kept putting their necks on the line for despite where the fuck -that- all went, and there's a lot of parallels between the Careers and beauty pageant/young actor kids where they're raised to be little icons that net rewards for the family (because remember, you and your family get extra bonuses the more you submit your name) and thrown into the talent pit and discarded when they're busted.

Vox Valentine

Just to confirm: yeah Puss in Boots 2 is effectively standalone. There’s one character who returns from the first, but she is contextualized fine.

Sarah Potter

I feel like the sponsor is the only reason that Katniss has to be nice for the cameras. If no sponsors then she would not care how she is perceived. It's only because sponsors show you what they like seeing of you and give you things you really need so you can survive. So if you removed sponsors from this story you would have a huge issue for the role.

Joshua Smith

Jesus the Goldeneye Facility on slappers only by Alec Trevelyan fucking got me lmao

Carrie

Based on the stuff you were talking about in this episode, I think you'd really like Chain Gang All-Stars

JessThan3

This chapter duo broke me. I read the rest of the book in one shot after saying I’d just find out the answer to the whats-in-the-tree cliffhanger. The ending jumpscared me because I also have that interview, so the ending was like 70% of the way through the kindle version Edit: I just re listened to a 2021 episode (magic fantastic, for my favorite bit ever the neopets nft story) and that back to back to this appears to show you currently have an audio issue. This one sounds more compressed than that one? It’s mostly Xeecee

Zachary Coleman

Third segment, first synopsis (The Match? The One? It's so generic I forgot what it's called already lol) reminds me of Timer, a 2009 romcom with a similar premise. I found it when I was trying to see what else Emma Caulfield (Anya from Buffy) had been in. I can't say it's great but I can recommend watching it once lol

Diana Gibson

Yeah very much this

Marisa

This but also the careers are all from the better wealthier districts and Katniss is like an upstart from the shittiest district that they want to put in her place

Marisa

Re: politics/reality TV/the stance of the book (idk if any of this would technically be spoilers but it is informed by having consumed all the books and movies) I don't think it's trying to be a direct comparison to reality TV or fascism, but I do think she's trying to use these comparisons (and contrasts) that are familiar to readers to show how this particular fascist state controls their populace. Early on, Gale seems to be there to say "the cruelty is the point" but I think the story itself is saying "actually the control is the point" which is why it matters that there is a balance of 'hope' (of winning and resources for the home district) next to the cruelty (of totally random state sanctioned mass murders of children), and why it matters that the capital citizens have some pathos for the tributes, etc etc Like, I don't think it's saying "the entertainment industry = fascism" but it might be saying "entertainment can be utilized by fascists to assert control"

Diana Gibson

My hot take on that new Puss In Boots is that it wasn't Shrek enough. It was way more of a straightforward fantasy action movie, only the villain really had that kind of grimy, irreverent vibe (though said villain WAS great)

Kzinssie

Yeah, it kind of has the vibe of a clique of jocks all competing with each other except they prioritize the superiority over everyone else first. To a much smaller extent, also the kind of loyalty like "I can pick on my cousin because we're related, but if you pick on my cousin then I'll be at you up" until in the end they kill each other off anyway lol

Diana Gibson

I don't know if this came up already, but from reading the other books, it seems like the careeros just team up in every Hunger Game until no one else is left and it isn't just for Katniss in this HG.
