SHHG! Episode 9: Freak Day

The Hunger Games chapters 19 & 20

We saw Asteroid City! We chat a little bit about our latest movie outing (mild? spoilers? Hard movie to spoil!) but not for long--because it's Freak Day, the fateful day when everyone went crazy and started biting each other. Or something? Maybe we should be reading that book instead, because the third act of this one is starting a little... slow. Katniss is flustered by Peeta, who she's seemingly decided is Good Now, which we're having a hard time buying--but on the bright side, this chapter had some really gory field dressing scenes that kind of rocked!

P.S Sorry my audio is a little overcompressed still! I thought I'd corrected things, but my settings still aren't quite right.

Guys, guys, guys... I think you're getting totally the wrong read on how Katniss perceives the audience. It's not about the audience rooting for the romance out of the goodness of their hearts. It's about them being invested in the drama. It's not a good or kind thing, it's about the absolute surface level of hoping that the Capitol people care. Not care about them as people, but in the way they care about being team Jacob or team Edward.

Scottee

Fun fact about GONE - it was written by the Animorphs lady's husband!

Gilmartin Fitzpatrick

I mean that would fit too, right? The Capital would probably be way more invested in the sicko romance between two bloodthirsty killers than the tragic romance between two small town kids

Kzinssie

I think there's only 2 other pg-13 movies i've seen that have nudity in them and they were Across the Universe and Titanic and yeah i have no idea why some movies are cool with it but others are like "you see one nipple, straight to an R rating"

Hiram Mojica

I really never had a yelling at the phone moment when y’all were doing Harry Potter or Twilight, but for some reason with Hunger Games it’s been nearly every episode 🤣 I’m loving it, though.

Alterstil

To be honest, that perfectly describes most of Wes Anderson’s movies 😆

I've been noticing a lot that you both are reading Peeta as having had his one good moment on the roof, and then promptly turning around and getting "Haymitch-pilled" as you've been putting it. My initial reaction was the opposite; that the scene on the roof tells us who he "really" is and oriented how I interpreted his actions later. So when he did things later I interpreted them with "what happened on the rooftop was genuine and still true" in mind. It's probably less interesting than "maybe he's bad"/"maybe he was lying on the roof to manipulate Katniss in some way" but as we've gotten further I'm feeling more confident that the roof is who he's "really" supposed to be, for better or worse. I do find his failure to find any way of bringing theory into praxis interesting, though. I read it as a sacrifice he was making, but even if I'm right about him, he's still not actually done it. He's playing the game. Do you have any idea how you'd write a version of his character in which the rooftop scene was true and he also managed to put his ideals into practice?

Eric

I wonder if any of the post Hunger Games YA dystopias go for like Undertale style metacommentary on the audience response to YA dystopias. Like it really feels like a tiny jump from the reality TV stuff here to that Imagining a YA dystopia that's just vagueposting extremely online writer drama actually, I think that would kick ass

Kzinssie

See, what my mind goes to for a Hot Wheels movie conceptually is Wachowski Speed Racer. Do like a larger than life racing movie where they're on brightly colored tracks with loop de loops

Kzinssie

I like to think that the Capitol fandom has discourse about how you can recognize the Games are problematic and still like the show

Elizabeth D

ahaha, this would be perfect if the story had leaned into it

The Shrieking Shack

I feel like that might be the exact effect it's going for, funnily enough!

The Shrieking Shack

I read and enjoyed GONE and it's sequels as a preteen adghjfd crazy to hear it as an example of a YA novel

AM

I'm not sure if they could drag out the famous "everyone has Uno, it came free with your fucking Xbox" meme into a full-length feature film but that's the only premise I could think of for a fuck-heavy Uno film

BuoyantTrain37

Hey, sugar, would you be a dear and get me a senzu bean from the Cornucopia? Haha, I'm bleeding to death

Cutey! Candy!! Cataclysm!!!

Peeta doing his 1960s misogynist routine as he's lying Yamcha'd in the mud is fucking gold

Cutey! Candy!! Cataclysm!!!

There's a way that Katniss's theory about their romance being 'integral to the success of the games' could turn out to be true in a way that I don't think the book intends. Like, the idea is that the winner also gets elevated to the status of celebrity and becomes part of the capital right, you could do some stuff where the game makers are rigging the game to promote narratives that prove the winners are worthy of being elevated above their station and that the games are a method of determining that, because that also confirms the preconcieved notions that the Capital audience has of themselves that they're of a better class of people. Though I agree with the appraisal that it seems like Katniss is just inexplicably correct.

Shift

Is that sarcasm?

I also saw Asteroid City this week! I will admit that I walked away from with a feeling that it was saying something profound, but I had no idea what about D: I ended up looking up discussions online afterwards. Was wondering if anyone else had this experience or if my brain was just turned off that day.

Blythe Atkinson

Oh yes, that's right! The crescent bread was from the District (or Katniss assumes that, at least?)

The Shrieking Shack

Peeta would know!

The Shrieking Shack

I think the idea is that poor people pooling enough money to do that is extremely rare, which is why it’s such a big gesture.

Ryan

Well, District 2 is the only other one in a position to benefit, with their boy-girl-couple still being alive. So would be funny if the sickofreaks there with their knife throwing and killing underlings have their secret compelling romance.

ZiggyWSB .

Hearing you guys musing on Katniss thinking the love plot must be compelling to the audience and her acting must be sooo good made me imagine a version of this where it’s not even her and Peeta that the rule change was for. It’d be terrible storytelling probably but it’s really funny to me to imagine that there’s some other super compelling and tragic battle royale romance happening out there with other tributes that Katniss doesn’t know shit about. Like it’d be stupid but also I love the idea of her just murdering the fated couple that the gamemakers themselves changed the rules for. (still listening to the ep aha)

superboo

I think it said that there was a gift from Rue's district for katniss? And that means that the regular district audience can send in loot drops. Haven't reached the end of the episode so apols if you address this, also I might just be remembering wrong

Genesis

omg Gone is the first one of these I've actually read. the entire series was fucking crazy, there was so much shit happening

Riley Johnson

The thing I have a lot of nostalgia for from when I was youngest is Raffi songs (they're still great). Good thing I don't have to worry about a gritty Raffi song update of Baby Beluga 😌

Eric

I loved your predictions this week. They are certainly interesting! I find the whole dynamic with Katniss and Haymith very interesting. And the fact that Peeta hasn't cottoned onto the clues and what they are doing that gets them sponsor gifts. The sleeping syrup just when Katniss needs to drug Peeta is a lot.

Joshua Smith

Oh the Gone series is the gnarliest ya series I’ve ever read like truly so much genuine stomach churning shit

Marisa

I'd be interested, if you buy Peeta's comment, that Katniss and Haymitch are exactly the same?

ZiggyWSB .

Clove was also the one really good at throwing knives, to which Katniss said "Thanks for the knife" So we have Knife Girl, Sly Fox, Angry Black Man and Evil Boy

ZiggyWSB .

Love in the Time of Freaks
