District 14 Dispatch: The Front Realm
Added 2023-07-14 14:00:11 +0000 UTC
A recent reboot announcement prompts us to reflect on our earliest trashy anime memories. Then we revisit some of our favorite nostalgia-baiting scams we've talked about in the past--where are they now? And what happens if a portal opens above their front realm?
P.S I mention a management group being involved with the wave of celebrity endorsements--here's a brief primer on what happened with that if you're interested; there's plenty more out there that's quite in-depth:

My favorite thing to come out of the celebrity-endorsed NFT phenomenon were the NFTs that Madonna sponsored, just because of how completely batshit insane the whole thing was. I don't know if the website is still up - when I try to access it, I get a Potential Security Risk warning from my browser - but you can still access it through archive.org if you wanted to watch a bad CGI model of Madonna give birth to live centipedes, for some reason.

Hell yes. It was the bit from that one article about "exploring the nature of humanity" that grabbed my interest - I have just the right mental illnesses for edgelord stories about the inherent humanity of all beings via a cool guy who blows shit up to hit every time (see also Kingdom Hearts)

"why would they respect wizards so much but not nintendo" nintendo doesn't have curses and enchantments
i got into anime with one piece through yugioh. i was super into it and started searching for more yugioh stuff in the library catalog and found collections of shonen jump, where i thought one piece looked neat. that was where i first realized anime was like a fully separate thing

After I showed my gf the Elfen Lied anime she went on to read the manga and still considers it one of the most dogshit pieces of media she's ever consumed.
To be honest the Deadman Wonderland anime completely succeeded at being the fun pulpfest it wanted to be, so there's really no reason to reboot it.
I've been very blessed by the reboot wave with Spice and Wolf, really excited for that.
Describing Light Yagami as "vain but never petty" is just wrong in an extremely funny way.

I'm obsessed with the s&c dr. Pepper zero, for sure. And my anime introduction was whatever two or three episodes of anime they had available in Comcast On Demand's tiny anime section.

When I got into anime it started as rewatching digimon, then I discovered the word deconstruction and then started with Evangelion, Revolutionary Girl Utena, and Serial Experiments Lain. I made my own little anime block watching a couple of each a night. As a young teen that did pretentious things to my brain

I think the thing that killed me the most about the NPR Death Note coverage is when they said "because it's a series for fanatics, there's even a book on how to read Death Note" because I *immediately* knew what they were talking about.
...but it's just that there's an extra volume of the manga that has bonus materials and such in it called "How To Read". Not, like, a fan-written book with criticism or theories or something like that. And I checked what the Japanese title was now and it was apparently literally the same thing, already in English, so they just didn't localize it to something that would make what it is clearer and that makes it even funnier to me.

They have a tiger.
The tiger can walk.

The punchline is that the Neopets nostalgia boom is absolutely happening in its truest form, which is thirtysomething furries making OC content (which was always the actual driving force behind Neopets to begin with)

I know very little about Elfen Lied but based on how both you and that article talk about it I'm gonna go for a long shot: if I'm a fan of both When They Cry and Shadow the Hedgehog (2005) will I enjoy it

Black Butler, Elfen Lied and Haruhi Suzumiya to me are like the peak trifecta of gaming forum avatars in the late 2000s, it feels like 80% of people had one of those

Speaking of Black Butler, are you aware of Disney's Twisted Wonderland? It's a mobile game with art from the creator of Black Butler, except it's (from what I can tell) a bunch of handsome anime men going to Hogwarts except the houses are based on Disney villains.

earlier this month, one of the creators of neopets had a meltdown in a public neopets discord server because people made fun of him for being into crypto

I’m so happy about this, the neopets explainer from whenever it had just happened a few years ago was one of my favorite episode segments ever lol

before even starting the ep i gotta report back to the comments section i read #murdertrending ! exactly as ridiculous and gory as one would expect. i do have a soft spot for like unhinged women characters whose unhingitude probably stems from some bad biases on the author's part but lets not think too hard (infact lets not think too hard abt The Politics of the book in general) (if a drag themed executioner kills a gay woman who can really say if thats homophobic or not. etc etc.). i recommend it for just a grossout silly time. danganronpaesque perhaps (its been a while since ive ronpa'd).
