District 14 Dispatch: Games Bond

It's too damn hot! We meant to record this last week, but the PNW heatwave had us steering clear of our computer desks, lest we spontaneously combust. But that means we have that much more to talk about this week. We've been playing Baldur's Gate 3 and other classic PC RPGs, reading The House in Fata Morgana, and watching every single James Bond movie. That's right--even the one that isn't technically part of the James Bond franchise. And after all of that, we have a special preview of a new segment coming to our main episodes!

Spoiler alerts: Nothing for Baldur's Gate 3 beyond Vibes; similarly, just very vague tone/structure spoilers for The House In Fata Morgana (we'll maybe talk more in depth about that soon?); spoilers for the most recent James Bond movie if anyone on Earth minds that

I haven't seen many Bond movies but I recently watched You Only Live Twice because it was filmed near where I live now. Like, if I drive a bit past the McDonalds I usually go to, I'll be at that gorgeous tropical coastline that Sean Connery was hanging out at in bad yellowface

It's a shame that Liz didn't see the 2020 change.org petition "Baldur's Gate 3 Deserves a Real-Time With Pause Combat Mode" in time to sign it, I really think that 557th signature might have made all the difference.

Hell ya house in fatta Morgana is rad as hell. Still inching my way through but love it. The music is A tier

Le Master

I don't know shit about James Bond but your tierlist got me to cross reference some things and here's something interesting: the two Roger Moore films that you didn't have on the bottom tier share a director (Lewis Gilbert, who also directed You Only Live Twice). The Moore Films prior to those were directed by Guy Hamilton (who also directed Goldfinger and Diamonds are Forever) while the later ones were directed by John Glen (who also directed the Dalton films)

I liked the linguistics stuff in ff16. Lots of modern-ish swearing but in a ye olde kinda context. My guy said "anon" once and it made my day.

Sam Harrison

I have such fond memories of Icewind Dale 1 and how bad I was at that game.

Crock272

BG3 really has been a great time for me, but i do agree on the writing feeling a bit too casual at times. Sometimes it's funny (karlach saying fuck), but sometimes i just wanna hear some bullshit elven words that make no sense to me!!! As for the real time with pause game moment, tyranny is a pretty good game to play through. it does have its moments where it's just being dark and edgy for the sake of being dark and edgy but it's a good game about being evil guys 👍 reminded me i wanted to do another playthrough of that game

Max

I have a very important update: I played a couple hours of Pillars of Eternity tonight, and I had a good time. And it's all Liz's fault.

David

For some additional local context I'm usually on my way to Kinokuniya when I go by there hehe

Bearplane

I think I walk by the exact Kiriko you're talking about all the time, I've never gone inside but I just might after the shout out

Bearplane

Every time you talk about James Bond I go "man I should start watching James Bond" and then I don't watch James Bond

Kzinssie

damn I want a deadfire shirt...

The Shrieking Shack

I'm so picky about this sort of thing I can't really point to a consistent example of what I'd call a best practice; I think ultimately it comes down to the presentation of the whole package (and my own expectations; this is entirely a me thing!). There's fantasy I love where people talk extremely casually; there's fantasy I enjoy where the language is nigh impenetrable. I just know that if I'm playing a Forgotten Realms thing I wanna hear some What Would You Have Me Dos

The Shrieking Shack

I've been playing so much Baldur's Gate 3 I'm afraid I also have transformed into... something.

David

Deadfire's marketing was non-existent. Boxes and boxes of Deadfire shirts, never worn. 😿

Lins

very nice hat!

seaweed

The ideal level of fantasy talk for me remains Fire Emblem Awakening, where they mostly talk like normal modern people but occasionally throw in a "hail traveler" or "what would you have me do" and instead of "oh god" they say "oh gods" and that sort of thing

Kzinssie

Baldur's Gate 3 has been a fun time so far for me!

Joe Cox

Oh my God I never thought I would get Fata Morgana talk on Shriekcast this is excellent
