SHHG! Episode 17: DMV Tycoon

Catching Fire chapters 10-11

We're back! Load roadworks couldn't keep us away from talking about these chapters, that feature some absolutely massive twists--political and technical. Did you know that there are solar-powered perpetual energy generating guns in Panem? Neither did we! We discuss those strange new worldbuilding additions, and attempt to sus out this book's relationship is to America's political discourse in the 2000s. Is this about the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq? Is it about 2000s geopolitical fearmonger--and if it is, which end is it coming down on? Is it trying to say something, or is it just deploying all of this loaded imagery to make a point about American Idol? Plus: we consider taking out an ad at the DMV!

i am actually going to the dmv soon, but unless you figure out how to get shriekcast ads running in washington i wouldn't see it

Cromalin

Thanks for another great episode. Looking forward to seeing your ad at my local DMV

Oh snap! We've been chasing shadows...

The Shrieking Shack

I suppose if I were Pres Snow and I believed Katniss was a symbol of rebellion, I would be wondering how to destroy her without making her a martyr, and an even more potent symbol. Maybe even as simple as making her do or say something pro-capital and putting it on the news. But, I don't think the political situation really makes much sense as it's being described anyway. I don't really buy that the berry thing was that important. Why didn't they just not air it, anyway?

Sam Harrison

The district 13 reused footage thing would make a lot more sense if it was recent? Like if they were still scrambling to cover it up a few months after, rather than no one else having noticed for 80 years. Or if it was reused sparingly in like a large rotation of clips and only noticed over a large timeframe that it cropped up multiple times. It's bizarre any way you slice it so there's probably not much point doing a fix

Genesis

I'm in Eastern NC and I would DIE if I saw a Shrieking Shack ad at the local DMV

Joe Cox

When yall say that Prim is 6, do you mean she's acting 6 or that she is actually like 6? Cause she was in the reaping so she's at least 13, maybe 14 now. Also, I don't think there is a Effie character card, only a scene card of her, I think there was a single card in the list with her when you read it, you called it a "chase rare"

There’s something I realized about a lot of dystopian fiction, and escape Italy the YA dystopias like Hunger Games and its imitators. However much they want to criticize the status quo (it’s debatable how much these actually want to do that), the readers reaction is often to be disturbed by the ways that the setting is different from the world they know, so the reaction is “thank God for the way things are”. That’s especially likely to be the reaction of the teenage target audience, who aren’t generally very political aware or sophisticated.

I will warn you it will be some time before I have to go again. Possibly long enough that I will actually forget this was a thing

Kzinssie

Suzanne Colins grew up as a Miltary kid whose Dad was serving in Vietnam and the Korean War so I wonder how much that environment is subconsiously influencing things....Or it's she's just throwing imagery at the wall lol

cem

Yes, absolutely! The imagery often feels--so far--like the statement itself

The Shrieking Shack

let's gooooo

The Shrieking Shack

I'm not reading along so I can't really say this for sure, but the way that you're describing the way that this book deploys real life imagery and symbolism is making me think of the way that so many other series stumble into this sort of thing, which is that it's purely for the benefit of the viewer to recognize. Like this was something that was going through my head when it came to the imagery related to the antebellum south that was happening in the chapters before now, the way that it was being talked about made it seem like it was something that was just there for the reader to recognize, note 'that's racism, i recognize that!' and move on from, rather than being a diagetic part of the setting that characters have feeling and thoughts about.

Shift

I feel like the only thing protecting Katniss from the Peacekeepers (apart from her wiles!!) is her fame, like surely she must be one of the most famous people in Panem so they have to be doubly assured before doing anything against her. Compared to Twill and the other person.

Joshua Smith

You guys got me into neopets too, I got lucky and currently have a candy flotsam

Cole Schwerzler

Xeecee, you delivered it somewhat jokingly, but I'd buy that mic from you. I don't have a condenser, and I'd like to.

Keith

Hearing you slowly list off every area of NC had me as a North Carolinian popping the fuck off. I was that NORTH CAROLINA MENTIONED image. I will be reaching out next time I go to the DMV

Kzinssie

why the hell do they even have a news channel???? but even so why didn’t they just bomb a random strip of forest and start using that as the “district 13” background if for some reason they had to keep showing it?? cartoon shit. most insane lore yet

Zachary Coleman

If you can get some Tennessee DMVs, I'll keep an eye out
