SHHG! Episode 27: The Nut

Mockingjay Act II

It's half sludge, half hunger this week! We check in with The Franchise's upcoming media and merchandising blitz, and then discuss the second act of Mockingjay, which... wow! That's a bit much! There's a lot of heavy stuff in this book that is not presented particularly well or interestingly, so make sure to check the content warnings below. Finally, we return to the world of 2010s fanfiction with a shocking third segment reveal.

(Content warning: Mockingjay introduces sex trafficking into the mix this act, and we don't love the way it's handled--it's typical corny thriller "I was actually a secret information broker" stuff, but it's a big chunk of the story so if you don't want to hear us dunking on that, skip 00: 40:48 to 1:02:25)

Side note: Patreon just added a new "podcast" feature that I'm not taking advantage of just yet because I need to manually tag every back episode lol. I'll get to that when I can

Lambda

Mockingjay is so much worse than I remembered. I blocked out allllll of Finnicks stuff. I kinda love sicko mode peeta though, I can’t believe you guys missed out on the trackerjacker to higurashi’s H-173 comparison lmaoooo

Julie Lerche

oh my god

Kzinssie

I did the Twilight Princess screaming reaction meme when I heard who the third person in the fanfic was

Kzinssie

LOL yeah he was my director on my last show- he was a pretty good director (even if i didn't always vibe with his taste lol) He's pretty easy to find online (Carlos Baena) & has written a bit about his inspiration & process. He's also like. literally not a star trek fan lmao

isawiitch

oh god. ohhhh god

The Shrieking Shack

oh my god for real??

The Shrieking Shack

Perhaps at some point, yeah!

The Shrieking Shack

I can't believe they texted Peeta NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE NIGHTMARE while he's taking LSD

Kzinssie

Do you guys plan to watch the Hunger Games movies like you did with HP, Twilight, and Maximum Ride?

snow

The Snow Prequel is kind of all about the Capitol Middle Class, with Snow being quite poor for being Capitol, and his friend(ish) Sejanus being originally from District 1, but having rich enough parents to move to the Capitol.

Frejo

I need the third segment fanfiction injected directly into my veins

spectre-ship

The HP brand is going to be exclusive and expensive, like the Star Wars hotel? maybe it will work out this time...

A sudden absence of bees

oh my god immediate jumpscare with the Unification mention my old director literally directed that lol. lmao even.

isawiitch

Yall should read Ready Player One next.

RebeccaC

We'll have a better answer when we're off of this book and know what we're doing next, I think!

The Shrieking Shack

I'm going to admit it feels like very little has happened in this one. IMHO the problems I see are very similar to HP in that it still has Kid Book Logic that sticks around as the novels get more serious: the battle discussion you're talking about would be silly even for Star Wars and amounts to the same sort of plan (old ventilation shafts). Like imagine if instead of using the garbage chute to escape Han, Luke, and Leia were down in the garbage for 2 weeks before considering it. Or if the Death Star attack was preceded by characters stating it has these trenches then 2 weeks pass and they go "maybe we could use those instead of flying right at it..."

To give you guys some hope, the Potter franchise is not necessarily healthy as a whole right now: Hogwart's did really well just like Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor did really well (actually both first games sold 30 million copies). However even in video games this doesn't follow: the Ubisoft big Star Wars open world game looks like it's struggling to sell 2 million copies after months of release and most people don't seem to know it exists. The rest of the franchise outside of games seems to be in a questionable state as well. Andor is doing great critically but is only viewed by a niche amount of people. The Grogu+Mando theatrical movie is a questionable choice that may or might not pay off. I would say giving the HP brand a high price exclusive feel is setting off warning bells to me, it sounds like someone who doesn't know what they're doing.

DJ

So, just put of curiosity, are you aiming for a monthly release schedule or are you doing something looser? Either way is fine!

Lambda

Genuinely thank you for explaining the spirk situation in detail because all I knew was people on tumblr were writing very serious emotional posts about spirk being canon which is very funny knowing what the source material is

Riley Johnson

I FUCKING CALLED IT ON THE TITLE (pumps my fist so hard my arm falls off)

Lambda

The people retreating who Gale wants to kill are from District 2, not the Capitol. Which is the District with the Cops and Military from which all the Psycho-Tributes in the Hunger Games come from. So Tomato, Tomato.

ZiggyWSB .

Oh yes, I remember that scene--I don't remember this specific aspect, but I'll go back and reread that before the next ep

The Shrieking Shack

We actually got an example of the middle class in the capitol explained to us with Katniss Make-Up-Team and her saying they're like children.

ZiggyWSB .

You know, call me crazy, but I'm starting to think hunger games might be rock stupid about politics, and everyone who rushed to go "sure harry potter sucks, but here's the REAL radical ya fiction!" were just as cringe. maybe it has the world's most clutch final stretch? 🤔

Femmoo

I realllyyyy hope you still do the prequel book even if it’s all condensed into one episode I think your reaction to it would be extremely amusing especially with how extremely weird it is as a follow up to this trilogy

Zachary Coleman

ooogh godddd

The Shrieking Shack

hey this one isnt showing up in the rss feed, maybe cus of the podcast thing you mentioned? not a huge deal at all just lettin u kno

Lyra Dawn

It's really something that the book keeps coming back to the idea that some people of the Capital have font size 72 airquotes 'degenerate sexuality' as a way of establishing their villainy, as if the idea that they are complicit in the Hunger Games is not enough to establish that these are bad people. It's like book is trying to establish a line between some people who are complicit in the actions of a state, as if there are some people who are the good people who like the Hunger Games who aren't deviants, and bad people who like the Hunger Games who are. Like you said the section goes to lengths to establish how widespread and accepted this sort of thing is in the Capital as a means of luridly establishing how evil they are (three books in), but then switches gears to talk about how bad it would be to kill people from the Capital who are trying to retreat. What is the dividing line that I am supposed to be drawing here? Do you want me to hate these people or not? Do you want me to feel merciful for the cartoon sex traffickers who who love the child murder show???
