Blake's world had been shattered. She stumbled from the hospital room and out into the hallway. How? How in the world? No! It wasn't possible! How! How could it even possibly be true! It was one of the first conclusions she came to about Weiss; a cornerstone of her love for the heiress. She had to be lying! Right? Right! But… no. If it weren't true, Weiss wouldn't have lied about it. Plus… she seemed… honestly remorseful over it.
Maybe! Maybe it was just a drug induced dream or something! Weiss seemed to still be a good bit out of it! Yeah! That could be! But no… if- and it was a big if- if it was something conjured by the drugs, then Weiss wouldn't have been so lucid about it. She wasn't sober, that much eas clear, but she also hadn't been unintelligent with rambling and the level of discombobulated that would require.
Blake could try and write all the little stories for it in her mind, but this was real. Weiss had really done it. She did it, and she tried to kill herself- at least in part to make up for it. It was too much. Blake couldn't process all that was running through her mind. It was just too much to parse through. What had Weiss done? What should be done now? Would she be ok? What did this revelation mean for them as girlfriends? Did Blake still want to be girlfriends? And… then the thought that refused to leave Blake no matter how hard she tried… Why did she still love Weiss all the same? Why didn’t this change things? How could she still love Weiss and want nothing more than the sweet girl’s happiness.
It was too much. Blake felt overwhelmed and had no way to deal with it all. She knew she shouldn’t, but she ended up barreling out the hidden exit. She should have stayed by Weiss, especially with that creep of a doctor still around, but she needed some fucking air, she needed it desperately. It felt like she couldn’t breathe. The sensation lightened slightly as she stumbled outside, but it was all still too much. She ended up collapsing against the wall of the hospital, hyperventilating, and then sobbing. She stayed like that for what was far too long, her face buried in her hands, curled up on the ground against the hospital. She stayed like that all the way up until a kindly voice broke through to her. “Sweetheart?”
“M- Mom?” Blake’s head shot up to see her mother standing awkwardly in front of her.
“There you are!” Kali wore a look of shock as she approached her daughter. “I was looking all around the hospital for you! Everyone said there was no one here by the name of Weiss or Blake.”
“Oh, I’m sorry Mom, they had us hidden off the register and had everything done off the book.”
“Ah, well… that’s good. And… I take it that means you aren’t gonna get billed either?”
“Oh? No, thankfully, the doctor that helped seemed to be up for covering it.”
“Again, that is good, but… if you aren’t sitting on the floor and crying over the bill… then what has my girl crying?” Kali turned around and sat on the ground next to Blake.
“I-”
“You wanna tell me about what you’ve been doing with the Schnee heiress?”
“No.” Blake coughed out.
“Then, you care to tell me why you showed up back at home with what seemed to be a faunus overdosed and covered in bile in your arms?”
“No!” Blake yelled.
“Maybe you’d care to tell me why you’ve been crying baby girl?” Kali threw an arm over her daughter and pulled her in tight.
“No!” Blake barked out again only to collapse into her mother and begin crying a new.
“It’s ok baby girl, it’s ok.” Kali sighed and held her daughter tighter and tighter till Blake began to calm. Though, when Blake did eventually calm, she was much firmer in asking, “So? What’s been going on? Is this all why you haven't come to see me and dad in so long?”
“M- maybe…” Blake pouted.
“Maybe?”
“Maybe.” Blake repeated.
“Well, maybe your father and I have kept up on the news; maybe we understand why someone would want to rejoin a certain rebel organization; maybe we’d even understand…”
“Maybe you two saw the videos?” Blake groaned.
“Oh no, those we definitely saw. Hard to forget.”
“Oh god.” Blake whined.
“It’s alright sweetie.” Kali Patted down Blake’s back. “It’s alright, but, I think it’s about time you start talking about what happened between you and that girl ever since you returned from Atlas.”
Blake had a sneaking suspicion that her mother already had a good idea what had been going on between her and the heiress, but she was too terrified to admit it. Even if her family as a whole had parted ways from the White Fang years ago, it didn’t make falling in love with a Schnee any less a betrail.
“Baby girl?” Kali scratched gently over Blake’s back.
“I- you! You know most of it already… I- I got roped into helping the White Fang as a favor for Sun and Neptune, and… and I helped them kidnap Weiss.”
“I know that very well sweetie. My concern is not with how or why it started.” She patted gently at the back of Blake’s head.
“I- I-” Blake stammered in a hushed sob.
“When did it start?”
“When- when- when did what start!?” Blake stammered and stalled.
“Oh please, I’m not blind.” Kali shook her head and turned Blake’s to look up at her.
“How- how did you know?”
“Because… when you knocked on the door… you had the same look on your face from when Adam got branded.”
“I- I-”
“Well, better with her than with him.” Kali shook her head.
“Wh- what?”
“Baby girl, your father and I had to watch you run off with an eighteen year old literal rebel when you were fourteen… you could be dating that Salem witch and I’d be relieved.”
“Oz says she’s like thousands of years old.” Blake laughed and cried.
“Yes, but at least you’re an adult now.”
Blake just laughed again and shook her head.
“So… are you ready to tell me about how it happened? Or are you going to keep trying to pretend it’s not obvious?”
“Where do I start?” Blake lamented.
“Hmm, I don’t know, when did it start?” Kali questioned lacidasically.
Blake whimpered. “I don’t know… Way too soon?” She wanted to bury her head in her hands and hide away from ever having to explain. “I- her father was… well, he was everything the Schnee are cracked up to be, but she was so sweet, so kind… she… and, then there was the news of that bill passing and suddenly it was so easy to hate her- uncontrollably.”
“Mhmm.” Kali hummed along, politely listening.
“And… and it made it easy to ignore and just to take out my anger on her… but then…” Blake deflated. “I don’t know when it happened! Or why! And… and I made her some promises that I broke, and she found out about it after we got in a fight about something else and- and- and- and I pushed her to try to kill herself!”
“You know that’s not how that works baby girl. If she was going to do that after a broken promise and a fight, there were plenty of other things going on behind it all.” Kali offered as she brushed Blake’s hair out of her face.
“I- there is other stuff but…” Blake whimpered.
“You want to talk about that or whatever had the two of you fighting?”
Blake’s cheeks burned bright red. “God, anything but the fight!”
“Ok then, what is the other stuff?”
“It- I- So… you know how… how when the White Fang first started going to shit, it began with a couple fudged votes?”
“I remember Adam’s tactics.”
“So, I thought; I knew! I knew Weiss wasn’t like her father, like the rest of the Schnee. I knew that despite being on the council, and despite everything saying that she must have voted to approve those awful laws.”
“Ok, but what does that have to do with your girlfriend’s attempted-” Kali stopped herself at the sight of Blake’s skin visibly crawling.
“Apparently… I was wrong? She did vote for it! And… she says she deserved to-”
“Ah.” Kali nodded. “And, her and her feelings aside, how do you feel about this?”
“How the hell should I know!? I- I love her, but believing she didn’t really do it was- it was like the cornerstone of me being able to even begin to accept it. And- and- and- I just! And- and-” Blake spiraled further and further.
“Hey, shh. It’s alright. Let’s talk about something different now. What else is on your mind?”
“The fight.” Blake admitted begrudgingly.”
“Oh? So what was the fight about baby girl?” Kali asked patiently.
“It’s- it’s umm?”
“Brothers, that bad?”
“Uugh, well… it has to do with the… umm… so, you know… you know how Weiss’s body isn’t… isn’t exactly the same it was before she got taken?”
“You mean since before you took her?”
“I! You know what I mean Mom!”
“Yes, yes I do.” Kali allowed.
“Well… we… kept making some changes… to her… like… with her consent… as a couple… for… recreation.” Blake muddled through her sentence.
“I… think I know what you mean.” Kali processed as politely as she could.
“And, she got mad- understandably so. She got mad at me for not… reciprocating.”
“And… you didn’t want to reciprocate because you are perfectly happy with the body I and the world gave you?”
“I- I am, and thanks… but… no, that’s not really it. I- I didn’t have any problem with it; at least, I didn’t in theory.”
“In theory?”
“It’s just! Everything! EVERYTHING she suggested was just so gendered, so gender specific and they would just make things bigger or worse or-”
“What’s wrong with gender specific?”
“I- well… that’s the issue. I- I don’t really know yet? I- just…” Blake whined.
“Baby girl?”
“I, there was something that happened; that Adam did, and… and I thought for so long that it was him that made some things feel wrong? That it was because of… of that trauma? But… even- even now, with someone as soft and kind as Weiss… it still feels wrong! So wrong! And- and even just… my- my me! Some things feel-”
“Wrong?” Kali filled in for Blake.
“Yeah.” Blake nodded.
“So? What’s wrong about it? Why do you think it is wrong- whatever it is?” Kali kept her question vague- almost assuredly so that they didn’t have to talk about it in any more detail.
“Mom?” Blake turned up to Kali with worried hopeful eyes.
“Yes baby girl?”
“What if- what if I’m not a girl?” Blake’s brows knitted stressed. “I- I don’t think I’m a boy, and I mean, there are some ‘girl’ things I like… but…”
Kali took a deep ponderous breath, one that left Blake spinning with terror for what her mother might say. “Then you’re not my baby girl.” Blake’s heart shattered. “You’re my baby… kid? Uugh, I’m going to have to work on this. But, I love you regardless.”
