Scary Stories To Tell During Late Stage Capitalism

The girlies get contemplative this spooky season — from pondering listener stories about ghosts and garments to philosophizing about the possibility of maintaining one’s moral code under capitalism. Plus, the most important question of them all: when is the last time we got a new candy?!

This episode was produced by Julia Hava and Eliza McLamb and edited by Olivia Burdette.

Yall should really read braiding sweet grass by robin wall kimmerer/get into some indigenous ways of thinking around our relationship to animals/hunting/sustenance. I think it would really challenge your idea that vegans are morally righteous. All love 💕

Olivia Pace

Vyvanse girlies unite <3333

coming from a mormon who wears garments- they are not puffy haha mine are skin tight!

car

where are the bonus ep tags

Skyrim

had to comment on your bug-mouse discussion! i am a life-long vegetarian and cannot stand animal suffering. but in the winter my parents’ 125 year old farmhouse will sometimes get mice. recently my sweet angel baby kitty has taken to catching these mice! my mom wants me to let him kill them because she doesn’t want the mice in the house - fair. but! he plays with them for like 10 minutes while they are ALIVE before killing and eating them (in one whole bite i might add). it is actually horrific and quite traumatizing to me.

Audrey Keairns

we need to open the discussion on ariana grande

Mic

Omg I’m finally a sweet baby angel and I’m going to listen to ALL THE CONTENT

Manderine Moon

okay I looked it up and Hershey released the Take 5 in 2004, but then it became part of the Reese’s category in 2019 😗

Haley Wilson

Was thinking this! They are recees tho still? But just with a pretzel

Summer

also people in the lobster diving community refer to them as bugs so - tea

Amelia Jones

hi gals! i have to let you know that i looked into why uniqlo is so cheap, and you’ll be pleased to know that it’s because they use a limited number of fabrics and make a limited number of styles, which allows them to order in bulk and keep the prices down! i haven’t deep dived into their labor practices, but i think it’s one of the better ones.

Amelia Jones

LOBSTER IS SO BUG!!! I haven't eaten lobster since I was a baby (even as a Mainer) because it's just so giving bug

Lily Ana Verna

my first halloweekend in college was in chapel hill and i tell you what that experience stuck with me forever

Mads

it's so crazy you say lobsters is bugs because when i was a toddler, i called bugs bucks. when we were in the grocery store and saw a lobster tank i said "bucks!"

lola bolado

omg so true, (this is callie from the foot story lol), I watched that movie later on with my brothers and we all thought it was so so funny how it was kinda similar to what happened to me and my cousin, i had forgotten about that - life imitates art i guess! diary of a wimpy kid is bomb

Henrietta Blythe

If you want a great book on the sociology and psychology of placing moral value on animals you should read “some we love some we hate some we eat”. Super fascinating and breaks down why we’re ok with some animals suffering but not others!

Emily Matthews

Take 5 are kinda new … maybe … ?

Haley Wilson

nerds gummy clusters feel new

lauren baker

Came here to say this!! Sooo creepy!

Zuzanna Łuczyńska

Just wanted to say, for anybody considering not eating meat or animal products… don’t make yourself crazy about labels. If you want to cut out everything except cheese, go off!! That’s an amazing and impactful change

Kirsten Drehobl

the more i learn about max, the more he reminds me of my ex, but in the way that max seems like a much better person lol

shannon

the kids i nanny are on the same schedule like one in their lunch and then it randomly disappears a few weeks later

lola bolado

i was also a stoner 14-16ish and omg i can't handle it now it makes me go insane

lola bolado

Fellow Callie from the foot story… I think you got pranked by your family 😭

Callie

I’ve noticed spotted lanternflies congregate around glassy modern buildings!! and those buildings tend to have a ton of people moving in and out of them so they are doing all the squashing. They are really slow and easy to kill and crunch loudly when you kill them 🤢

Connie

Reading this a few days after turning 26 👁️👄👁️

hello Julia it was nice to run into you at the UPS store and i apologize for not introducing myself

i’ve been of ghost blob experience in the past!! i lived in a haunted apartment in montreal for 3 years and i’d often wake up around 2-4am feeling a strong presence in my room. i’d see glowing orbs and sometimes a wispy kind of vapour which would float through the walls after a minute or so .. it kinda had a mischievous presence but it didn’t really do much so i got used to it. i eventually did some research and found out that there was once a hospital across the street for terminal patients, which burned down about a century ago. i’m pretty sure it’s where the metro station is now (villa maria if there are any mtl girls here) .. anyway there’s a bit more to the story but overall i was chill with it and even said goodbye when i moved out. also our neighbours across the hall had experienced similar things as well

emma ☆

26 is the average age where your body begins to have more cells die than you can replace I think!

chessie

!!! also as a marine biologist who studied capture stress in fish (sharks specifically) their innervation in areas is different than ours so I don’t think we necessarily have an idea of how painful / not painful fishing can be, especially in sharks. And there are certain species that can handle being caught and released pretty well, re stress on their bodies, and some species are super fragile and have high post release mortality, so it’s not all bad at all, it just is important to be informed about best practices in angling!

chessie

Cow conversation reminded me of this time I went to visit my brother in Seattle and we went to get seafood at this place and I guess they were trying to show how fresh their seafood was but literally in the middle of the restaurant there was a TANK OF ALL THE FISH and then after we ordered they went and GOT THE FISH

Molly Kerrigan

when i lived in england we celebrated halloween!! mostly in the american communities but the brit’s are known to celebrate too!

Emily D

Looove hearing such a nuanced conversation on veganism.

Emma Clare Hattemer

So we had a mouse in our apartment before and put out a trap with some cheese, this lil smarty pants kept gettin the cheese but not activating the trap and this became a lil morning activity for a while, marvelling at the fact that the cheese was gone but no mouse trapped. One morning I woke up and there was a lil mouse dead in the trap and I instantly burst into tears 😭 They're super cute 🥺

Erin

I learned I have the exact same taste in donuts as Eliza

so about the hunting/fishing convo (as a fellow southern binchie), i listened to a wonderful 2 part episode of Adventures of Memento Mori - a podcast that explores different aspects of death- that covered the ethics of hunting & fishing for food vs being a mindless meat consumer vs going vegan/vegetarian. it was SO interesting and really changed my outlook on hunting. we're so sheilded, like eliza said, from the death that happens so we can have meat basically whenever we want. obviously it's a privilege to have the funds to buy locally sourced meat & also live in an area where one can kill an animal in a way that preserves its dignity, but if you can i implore you to do so. after learning about the mass, industrialized production and slaughtering of cows, chickens, and pigs i am so much more conscious of how the animal lived & also died before being put on my plate.

amber walls

Eliza's mom queen of Halloween 🎃😂😂

Erin

Ireland kind of does Halloween the exact same as America except less extra

Erin

Like compare Hershey's to Dairmilk.. insane the difference haha

Erin

Zakaz means ban in polish!!

Łucja Żurawska

julia I have the perfect hamantaschen recipe for you if you think they’re too dry! Try this one https://whatjewwannaeat.com/strawberry-champagne-rainbow-hamantaschen/ It’s basically a sugar cookies instead and also do it with lemon curd (not lemon pie filling) it’s SOOOO good

taylor rosen

lobster is bug - julia when she reinvents kosher law logic around seafood

Sarah Becca

maddie blake

In ur outro for the last ep I thought the ghost sounds were the buzzing of wasps to gag the wasp binchie 😭

Eloise Hendrix

Re: Halloween candy/no new candies. I grew up in the UK/Middle East/US and experienced Halloween in all 3 at various ages and stages! It is a mostly American holiday tho and did celebrate in the American circles of these other countries. And I will say there are many many different candies out there but it does just kinda depend on the vibe of the country. I remember the first time I had a whopper in my Halloween haul instead of a Maltesers (uk version) and I spat that shit out it was so nasty to me! Tasted so unreal and plastic…

Chance Al-Hajji

Literal crack

Bella

I agree with julia on the jelly issue

Ruthie Hall

My mom would let me pick out a cute dish from goodwill to put my candy for my room. It felt so mature and I didn’t even eat much of it because it looked so cute now I don’t like sugar lolz

Lacey Koch

delighted to hear that julia is a fellow wine-mom-esque smoker of weed. every night i get home and smoke like i am a tired business father drinking a scotch after a long day of doing numbers and meetings

kate burns

Julia Domagalska

Omg haunted by a polish ghost who hates ouija???

Iris

There is a candy w chocolate and potato chips!!! (not Halloween candy) but Trader Joe’s snacky clusters. Sooooo yummy

Sabrina Benchaabane

As a life long biker geurl, Max is fucking crazy for biking only a month before going on that trip.

Adelaide Rava

Loved the story queeen <3 glad that you are safe and recovering from the church!!

Hannah Mitchell

omg eliza i can tell you are on the EDGE of being vegan and i deeply admire how open you are to it. you should read animal liberation by peter singer.

Isabel Algoe

As a teen who is on the weed path Eliza went down, It’s nice to know that i, In fact, cannot keep this up for the rest of my life.

Abi Wallace

nerd clusters are new!!!!! i think lmfao love those shits

liz

HAHA I tried to make it as mild as possible to not offend active Mormons... maybe just skip the part where I refer to the Church as a cult and you should be good

Stella Oaks

I’m only a little bit into this episode so not sure the context but normally I make my male Mormon coworker listen to this pod with me 😂 glad I didn’t play this one

Hannah Mitchell

And may I say should I return as a ghost I will SURELY wreak havoc on Mormon missionaries in other countries for the damage they do

Stella Oaks

I'm the ex-Mormon HAHAH thank GOD I converted almost nobody (I wasn't willing to manipulate people lmfao)

Stella Oaks

Hi girlies! I work for a massive “snacking” company which makes all of your fave little snackies and a good portion of the most popular halloween candies. The reason there isn’t any new candies is the insane over saturation of the snacking/candy market. The industry is dominated by like 5 companies and they are all too busy competing with each other to release anything actually new. The focus is very much on taking each others market share, introducing a truly new product would likely take away from their market share not the comp. R&D is also crazy expensive on these products so it’s simply not worth it to them. Who said capitalism breeds innovation 🤨

laura

ME SCREAMING NERDS GUMMIES INTO MY PHONE KNOWING DAMN WELL YALL WONT HEAR IT

Jay Ess

Eliza if you want to eat an apple cider donut ever you have to kill the laternflies bc they’re coming upstate and they’re gonna KILL THE APPLE TREES

Aimee Albright

in the uk many people get upset that our halloween is too americanised w the decorations and trick or treat :/ also cus it’s too close to guy fawkes night where we set alight an effigy of a historial terrorist 🥰

mimi kiki

Re: trick or treating in other countries….spent some time in Manila and can confirm children would go around on Halloween saying “trick or treaattt! Happy Halloween!! Candy or moneyyyy?” And then hold out their lil hands for said candy or money. I’m honestly obsessed with their hustle.

Emma C.

Chocolate cake donut supremacy!

Liv Tambrini

Susan Spungen’s Marbled tahini shortbread cookies - google it bc they’re so fun to make and they look good and they’re scrumptious

Maya Puri

Y’all I scraped my knee yesterday. Summer bucket list ✅✅✅

Jellybean

Nerds gummy clusters are new!! they are breaking records on sales or something. can’t lie… I’m hooked

Anna Eeeee

And the Shaq gummies lol

Annie Backlund

Regarding “if [a cat’s] head can fit, their body can fit,” this is also true of octopi! Isn’t that scary and neat!

Avery

I think people feel very put off by hunting because they think it's barbaric but it's how equilibrium is maintained. Was talking to some people from PA fish and game and they were saying really the only way to combat chronic wasting disease is through organized hunting. Wish it wasn't considered so taboo :(

lizzy

Spotted lantern flies are the modern day hitchbot (destroyed by Philly residents ❤️)

libby

Noooo Lizzie Borden is my ancestor cousin 😧

Marsss

exactly!! its ecosystem balance, they can disrupt the entire food chain by outcompeting native flies 💞💞

Jazz

ecologist here 😻 hunting & fishing is truly very important for population control (ex. current overabundance of white tailed deer as people have 1) increased supplemental feeding & 2) decreased hunting habits) - in actuality, we need more hunters in our communities! there is also a need for educating hunters on how to utilize every part of an animal to limit waste. xoxo, wildlife barbie

Jazz

Go jags 🐾✊

Emma Kanjorski

Eliza you NEED to try some hamantaschen now that you’re an NYC girl. Michaeli’s makes my fave (honestly I go there for every holiday for any Jewish baked goods)

Meg Henley

You need to kill spotted lantern flies not because you're more important than them but because they are not more important than the hundreds of native species impacted by their arrival. People ascribe a lot of moral characteristics to the concept of invasive species - what is 'native', why is it 'less deserving' than what already lives here, etc. Fundamentally there is a biotic balance and the introduction of invasive species disrupts it. The whole is more important than the one spotted lantern fly. Also, lol @ not that many people would smash spotted lantern flies in New York. In Philly I used to watch groups of people go out on their lunch break and lay waste to groups of THOUSANDS of them

lizzy

was literally about to say this!!

Brooke Stocco

Eliza, you don’t have to explain or defend why you don’t smoke weed. No one needs to defend or explain why they don’t partake in something. It’s personal and no one’s business. ❤️

avvsies

The new candy is nerds clusters!!

Roxanne Smith

Heyy czech binchie here! So in czech “zákaz” literally means prohibition or ban and its used for the stop signs, so that is probably why those images came up…anyways hard to tell if it might have been a czech ghost of cancellation or if it is just a coincidence

Amálie Honová

Elizaaa get bug crickets! They sell them for reptiles and they can’t reproduce so you don’t have to worry about them getting stuck or invading your apartment I did it for my CRAZY ASS cat and he absolutely loveeeddd it. Highly recommend. Still sad but to me wasn’t nearly as painful as if I got him a mousey 🥹

Sage Wilson

goooooood morning world i have a new ep to listen to on the way to eliza’s show tonight💖😁

Prudence

when I was 13, my best friend and her whole family biked across the entire country in one summer and they stayed in some of the sketchiest places and at just random people’s homes but I guess it’s kind of a thing that fellow bikers will just let other long distance bikers stay in their homes for free. the sense of community kinda goes off!

abby elsethagen

the newest candy i can think of is the nerds gummy clusters?? i volunteer for the library and the kids at their Halloween party were so hype for those

Sarah J

queens zakaz quite literally means prohibition/stop in polish which would explain the bunch of stops signs showing up when you google…..but a chilling story nonetheless…….

Julia Domagalska

jelly does NOT belong in doughnuts #teamjulia

Sofia Colacurcio

I believe shortbread originated from Scotland

Finlay Rowan Seddon

“Girl, that was me in my garments” —the jelly in my donut (unwelcome) :(

Iris

Okay we’re eating well this month ????

Jacey B

hello binchettas ! in scotland we call trick or treating “guising” (guy-zing) and you have to dance monkey dance for your sweeties ! such as tell a joke or a story on the doorstep to earn your sugar ! my parents used to get mad when i referred to it as trick or treating when i was wee, as they were concerned i was being americanised by the simpsons and … well yes !

Christy Robertson
