Mass Ave used to go around Chester Square Park (where Mass Ave widens), but in the fifties, they destroyed the park by building Mass Ave through it. They beautified the little parks on either side about ten or twelve years ago, and there was a proposal in the late nineties to build a tunnel underneath it (I have some Globe articles on the proposal saved that I can send you if interested), but nothing ever came of it.
