You're so spot on with your observations about Michigan cities. The irony of the auto industry building Michigan's industrial past and prosperity and then said industry destroying every major city center for freeways and garbage sprawl never ceases to make me sad. Mega projects like the Renaissance center and the Phoenix center are great examples of the failure to draw people to downtowns without anyone living there. Even the smaller cities like Kalamazoo are still struggling to get people to live and work downtown. Changes to make city centers more walkable and bikable are usually met with a tirade that transit nerds are sadly used to. It's a bummer, there are so many great spots in these cities that would blossom under a less car centric world.

I've been to Dearborn. Agree Henry Ford and Greenfield Village are worth visiting
