[EARLY VIDEO] Amtrak Night Owl from Boston to DC - Apparently a Trip Report

Been a couple months since we've had one of these!

[EARLY VIDEO] Amtrak Night Owl from Boston to DC - Apparently a Trip Report

Oh no! Maybe it's US only.

Miles in Transit

Did you know that promo code POORBID doesn't work if you're trying to pay in 🍁Canadian🍁 dollars

David M

it would be funny if he got seat 11F

Random Transit Adventures

Quite possibly!

Miles in Transit

Funny thing was that right before this was posted I realized that we haven't seen Jordycakes since the Great Race to New York. Willing this into existence?

Jason Bereza

Oh geez, that's VERY lucky! Would've been an interesting interaction with the conductor.

Miles in Transit

Last time I did this train south from NYC to DC, we had a four-hour overnight layover in DC and I decided to get some sleep since we weren't moving and get off at the end of the layover. Welllll, that didn't happen. Luckily I woke up in Alexandria and not Newport News

JORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRDEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKz

Nick Albanese

I knew I should have said "except Auntie Anne's" but I get it

jake conarck

I was gonna take it from New York to Boston on the literal night when they cancelled it, and I had to find alternate plans! I had put in a Poor Bid for a room too, it was INSANELY cheap (like $40 for a roommette and $80 for a bedroom? I picked the bedroom hoping it would be my first time in an Amtrak bedroom, but alas).

Miles in Transit

Thanks so much!!

Miles in Transit

Oh gosh, if I'm eating at a station, it's usually with the goal of getting something fast! Like...the Auntie Anne's at Penn Station. Or the Auntie Anne's at South Station. Or the other Auntie Anne's at Penn Station.

If only you did this for real three years ago when the sleeper existed on this train (and not for just five minutes! Double Lol'), I rode it in sleeper July '21 and it was the best way to do Boston to Washington overnight (I actually was going to Alexandria). I acknowledge you, and especially the Tribal King for going through this for our delectation! Always love the "Poor Bid!" "Ned!" "Foamer Meter!" as well as those "Bathroom reviews!" and I guess the "Menu Shot!"

Matthew Betzner

I love my Manta mask. My fiancé stole mine, so I had to order another one

I took this overnight service (with the 9 PM departure) in 2014 on my Rail Pass trip. At the time I liked it okay...the hard part was spending 12 hours in DC waiting for the Crescent. It also makes a lot more sense financially as a RP segment.

Matthew Harris

I love the electric to diesel engine switch Moment of Zen at the end there. Miles, I don't know if you've answered this before, but do you have a favorite eatery at a station in the NE corridor? I miss Bridgewater's in Philly so much...

jake conarck

Haha, I had a feeling you'd love this one! I was excited to see your comment.

This was perfect. This is peak Milesintransit

BELIEVE IT OR NOT IT WAS ***HIS*** IDEA!!!!

Miles in Transit

Heck yeah, thanks so much!!

Miles in Transit

I don’t know how you convinced Jordycakes to do this

Billy Anderman

I'm going WAS to BOS on this train in a few weeks, so I just ordered a POORBID sleep mask

Max

Oh for sure, I am always curious how the price compares to flying since I am fine paying a little more to get from A to B faster by plane than take FOREVER on a bus/train. But I do think you still got the point across, the value for money is not there.

Calvin Witt

If only this train HAD roomettes...

Miles in Transit

I tried!!

Miles in Transit

Oh no! This is a "YOU STUPID IDIOT" comment waiting to happen...

Miles in Transit

He was perfect for the job!

Miles in Transit

Oh man, I meant to talk about flight price comparisons in my post-mortem and forgot! But "it's really expensive" still gets the point across, I think.

Miles in Transit

I checked on Southwest and the "worst" flight I could find from DCA > BOS was 9 hr 30 min with a 5 hr layover in Chicago! $164, booked 1 month in advance, on a Wednesday.

Calvin Witt

I used to take this one about every other week. But just from BAL to RVM southbound and reverse northbound due to the better business class (and timing worked great for me). Though sometimes especially Fridays they put a regular business class car on it which sucked.

NedsKid

I saw the title and I was like oh I wonder if Jordan will be in this one. And then he was.

Max

oh no

Corey Rowe

Technically there are other NE Regional trains with the half cafe-half business class car. #186 is an example (Newport News->New York), as well as #151 (New York->Roanoke) - this is because the southbound Night Owl terminates in Newport News, but the northbound Night Owl originates in Roanoke, so there are some other trains that are used to shuffle the Night Owl equipment from Newport News to Roanoke as a result.

Peter

Miles, you're supposed to sleep on a sleeper train, sleep!

JJRol

I think that the bottom bunks are 6’6”. Source: also 6’5”

Seth

Miles dragging Jordan on an overnight Amtrak train is a GREAT video premise

Kristen

I love overnight Amtrak trains it’s just that the roommate rooms are just too small for someone like me that is 6 foot 5
