[EARLY VIDEO] VIA Rail Lake Superior (Budd Car) from White River to Sudbury - Apparently a Trip Report

This one's just really cool. One of the wildest adventures I've ever done!
Ooh, that's good to know re: the equipment - it kinda sounds like the more unique experience might be the summer variant!

I can't watch it unless I'm in Canada, I think! It appears to be blocked in the US...I'll link it in the video description, though!

I didn’t even know this existed. The Alaska Railroad has a similar flag stop section, operated in the summer by a single bi level Colorado Diesel Railcar. In the winter though you just flag down the full intercity train from Fairbanks to Anchorage. Those typically run 2 SD-70s, a dining car, a cafe car, 4 coaches, a baggage car, and an ex-Amtrak F-40 cab car. The equipment is less unique but being able to flag down gigantic 6-axle freight locomotives and then eat a full table service lunch in the middle of nowhere is pretty insane.

I had insomnia last night and ordered the silk Manta mask with the POORBID code. I'm so excited (and so ready)

Imagine if you could bring Amtrak your 4 wheeler on Amtrak.

Great video! I did it a few years ago—in and back from Sudbury with a hotel overnight—and need to do it again. Met a duckboat somewhere in the middle.
+1 on the Churchill run. Take some books and enjoy the sleeper! And get the pizza in Thompson…
Oh, and watch the TVO doc on the White River train if you haven’t already. https://youtu.be/9x2o_1ZIcBU?si=DjHU0_DznezRn9zv

Yeah, we flew on Porter in a Dash-8; Air Canada flies there too, also with Dash-8's.

My goal is to eventually ride every VIA route, so definitely someday! I've heard it's a real slog in terms of scenery, but it's also just completely fascinating in its existence!

Thanks so much! I didn't realize there is actually a fee charged for some of those big vehicles people bring on!

We flew Porter Airlines via Toronto to Sault Ste. Marie, and we took Ontario Northland from Sudbury back to Toronto. Sadly the Bridge Bus isn't around anymore – it died during COVID!

Awesome trip report. I did this trip in 2018, but flew to Sudbury and rode round trip. (A VIA dogcatch crew was on my Toronto-Sudbury flight, they were intercepting a 24-hour late Train 2 at Capreol). The person sitting behind me on the eastbound train had an excess luggage fee collected for bringing their lawn mower on board, and the largest stop was stationless MP 88 (where I think you discussed deer antlers being loaded). Half the train detrained at MP88 to go on a fishing expedition with their drums of fuel, weeks of food and water provisions, which were walked down to their waiting dock with barges. Was a most incredible trip. Thanks for bringing back fun memories and I'm glad you got to experience it too!
Agree with Max's comment you need to check out the Churchill run. I did that this spring (still bring your winter clothes!)...you would find it fascinating. And as a basic survival service it's the cheapest 2-night sleeper ticket in North America.

Seems like a really amazing route. Might be a little far fetched to ask but I’d love to see a Miles video on the Via rail to Churchill, Manitoba one day. Another middle of nowhere route that I find really fascinating.

Impressed how you go to the ends of the earth to bring us transit content. As I watch this I’m only about 80km from the Soo, and am wondering how did you happen to get there to start the journey?

Interesting - knew this was coming since I saw the tweets, and was really looking forward to it. I’ve taken the Corridor and Canadian, but have always been curious about the oddball rural routes. I’ve heard of some of these towns before since my Dad’s gone fishing up there - he mentioned one of the places was accessible by train (he drove up from Michigan and took the really bumpy dirt road).
One question - how did you get to Sault Ste. Marie (and from Sudbury)? I know from here in Michigan you could take an Indian Trails bus to Sault Ste Marie on the Michigan side, and then take the Bridge Bus across the border. Think there are several intercity bus options from Sudbury to Toronto (and also the Canadian from Sudbury Junction a little ways out of town), but not overly familiar with that. Figure you may have just flown, though even then I figure it had to be some small regional jet or prop plane…

Yes, White River has cell service, but that's about it (I think Chapleau did too) until you get within like a half hour of Sudbury.

11:15 -- is this confirmed? i really want to ride this train, but will the RDCs really be going away at the end of the year?
also, how terrible is the bus ride? i've never been on an intercity bus so i don't exactly have any expectations but in order for me to ride it over thanksgiving break (winter break would probably be a terrible idea considering, y'know, canada), my mom and i would spend the night in white river and then take the early morning bus to sault ste. marie. since you guys did the trip, how bad/good is it, compared to say, amtrak (since i haven't ridden any intercity buses, i don't have an intercity bus comparison!)

As a northern Ontario boy, thank you for sharing the beauty of that region. So weird seeing your home town on an international superstar’s video feed.
