2025-01-26 00:30:46 +0000 UTCFinally watched this and sadly never took this trip despite spending most of my career in STL. (Peter's post below is probably the reason why as I left in 2018) Actually, most of the state says Mizz-ur-ee; only KC and a few rural areas that say Mizz-ur-ah. A few other comments™. The Kirkwood stop is very popular and there's a great local coffee chain shop called Kaldi's Coffee just across the tracks where I saw the train pass through a few times on their patio. Washington is the edge of the St Louis exurbs and has been discussed as the end of a starter commuter train service into STL which would include stops in Pacific, Eureka (Six Flags), Kirkwood, and Webster. The Oktoberfest in Herman is not only popular, but Amtrak actually publicizes taking the train to Herman and I think they run extra trains for it. I believe they also started running extra trains for the state fair in Sedalia about the time I moved to California. Warrensburg is the home of Whiteman AFB, one of the two bases that host the B-2 bomber (don't know if that's still true) along with the home of Central Missouri State where my friend got her degree so it has two populations (students and military) of steady riders. Definitely an excellent trip report. Looking forward to the Lincoln review which I have taken and enjoyed. Plus, Chicago is always fabulous to visit.

2025-01-19 04:30:46 +0000 UTCYou should try taking Amtrak/Via Rail from Port Huron to Sarnia. While only 23 mins by car, it takes over 16hrs by transit. You would take the Blue Water to Battle Creek then the Wolverine to Detroit then the Q line to Congress Street then the tunnel bus to the Crosstown 2 bus to the London station, to Toronto, before taking train #87 to Sarnia

I think that the political and social base of Amtrak is actually much broader than what most people take it to be, but I wonder if that was the case on this train.

2025-01-16 21:46:59 +0000 UTCThe lounge in St. Louis is super small. It has a couple chairs and a couch, a counter area with water, and nothing more. Couldn’t be much bigger than 200 sqft. Anything more than 5+ people is pretty packed. Back in the early 2010’s, this train was known for its extremely short consists (2-3 cars). UP had detectors installed around 2017 that required 40 axles on all trains to be picked up by the detector, so Amtrak has since deployed a ton of equipment on it to meet the 40 axle requirement (kind of like CN on the Illini/Saluki). This train gets a ton of people on day trips. The Jefferson City to Hermann (and back) crowd usually has a whole car dedicated to themselves. I’d argue the majority of people taking this train are on day trips on the weekends and in summer. This was the first Amtrak train I ever took, it holds a special place for me. I took it recently in October, but the venture cars kind of ruin the vibe it once had.

That's mostly a function of my expectations being extremely low, but it was still a much better city than I anticipated. Also, I have to ask, what do you say when you narrate the "poor bid" you know you're going to overlay? Do you say "poor bid" or do you say "bid up" and if you say "poor bid" do you use that same tone? Also also, we need more uncensored Jordan content!
