2026-02-13 00:59:00 +0000 UTCThis was originally built when the biggest employer in town was a paper mill across the river, une that used the flowing water of Willamette Falls as it's worse of power. A big obstacle for some of them commuting home after crossing that bridge that Miles pointed out was climbing the hill back home. Therefore, the elevator really was what passed for commuter transit back when it was built.

2026-02-12 04:30:19 +0000 UTCOn a very specific note, Oregon City is also (more or less) the southmost town that can be reached on Trimet. But south of Oregon City there are lots of little rural bus routes connecting the suburbs, exurbs, and small towns of the Willamette Valley. I think that exurban areas in Oregon might have a friendlier view of transit than in other places, because for people with the time and inclination, you can get to a lot of places! But going from Oregon City to Molalla by public transit is a very specific transit adventure.

2026-02-12 02:41:16 +0000 UTCYou missed mentioning another way to get to Oregon City: the Amtrak Cascades has a stop there, two times a day, in both directions. It is one of the local stops (along with Tukwila, south of Seattle) that is served by the Amtrak Cascades but not by the Coast Starlight. It is not exactly an efficient way to get there, but it is very cheap ($2 from Portland, making it one of the cheapest rides in the Amtrak system, and a slightly more expensive $8 ride from Salem).
