This salty sailor takes the family's order at The Rusty Barnacle.

He's the latest in a long line of characters designed entirely for Bart, the mischievous scamp, to bounce off of. Our second this episode, after the Femail Carrier. His sarcastic attitude probably would not be tolerated too well in most customer facing jobs, but I can empathise with his plight, as he appears to have it rough. The man lost an eye for God's sake!

The part where Homer bluntly tells him to shut up stood out to me. It's not really a joke, it's just...mean. I wonder if there was a temptation to put more of a spin on this moment, or if the lack of cleverness in Homer's reply IS the humour. "Shut up" is a phrase used often later in the show as a comeback highlighting a lack of wit on a character's part, perhaps this is the first instance of that.
