0388 - Homer the Thief

What a strange way to start an episode!

Now, it is probably not the place of this blog to determine whether events in the Bible literally happened or not, but as far as the reality of The Simpsons is concerned, this scene is canon. It's not presented as a fantasy sequence, or as a dream of Homer's to tie in later - and so as presented, it is a thing that happened in this universe, related to the rest of the episode only thematically. And I have not brushed up on my Bible studies since...ever, but I suspect this brief scene with the Jews at the foot of Mt Sinai is not directly mentioned.

That means the fact that this guy looks and sounds suspiciously like our beloved Homer Simpson (but with more fuzzy facial hair) is purely coincidental.

It is entirely possible that this man is some ancient ancestor of Homer Prime, but there's no direct link between this scene and the present day timeline, so we cannot say for sure, despite one of the wikis claiming it as fact.

I'm torn as to whether I should apologise for putting the internal logic of this opening scene under so much scrutiny. It is just a silly cartoon but I mean...that's why we're here, right? For pointless pedantry?
